Getting Along: A Positive Approach to Bullying National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence: Friday 17 March

WALT: recognise bullying and use strategies to stop it. WILF: An understanding of types of bullying Confidence to use strategies to stop or deal with bullying to self or others Discuss that we may not be able to stop the bullying but we can respond to it positively

What is Bullying? Watch the video and discuss the question. Bullying is NEVER okay! What is bullying? What is NOT bullying! Who can be bullied? Who can be ‘a bully’? How does being bullied make you feel? Kids talk Stop at 1.49. Ensure students have a good understanding of ‘bullying’ and that it is repeated incidents. Important to discuss what it is NOT! (see Handout) Watch ‘Kids talk’ to summarise

Wellbeing and Bullying Bullying is “when someone (or a group of people) with more power than you repeatedly and intentionally uses negative words and/or actions against you, which causes you distress and risks your wellbeing” (Bond, Carlin, Thomas, Rubin & Patton, 2001). Bullying’ affects our wellbeing. Discuss how it might affect our physical, social, emotional, cognitive or spiritual wellbeing. Bullying is “when someone (or a group of people) with more power than you repeatedly and intentionally uses negative words and/or actions against you, which causes you distress and risks your wellbeing” (Bond, Carlin, Thomas, Rubin & Patton, 2001).

Say NO to bullying! Say YES to our own wellbeing! What positive things can you do if you are being bullied? YOU have the power!!! Brainstorm what children can do themselves if being bullied. Watch the next part of the video ‘Bullying is never okay’ Stop at 2.25. Discuss. Ignore them and don’t show any reaction Tell them to stop and then walk away Pretend you don’t care and act confident Find somewhere safe Get support from your friends Talk to an adult who can help Leave the online conversation or chat Block and report the person Protect yourself by using private settings If these strategies don’t work, talk to an adult (reporting)

Say NO to bullying! Say YES to others’ wellbeing! What positive actions can you take if you see someone being bullied? Our special Superpower (Yrs 3-6) We ALL have the power to STOP bullying! Yr 2: Continue watching the rest of the video ‘Bullying is never okay’! Yrs 3-6: Watch ‘Our Special Superpower’ video

Finding solutions to bullying Milton's dreams are dashed On a scale of 1-10, where 10 is when everything is great for Milton, how would Milton be feeling now? What could he do to feel better and move himself up the scale? Watch the video and use a solutions focused approach to solving this problem.

What do you think? Do you agree/disagree? People who choose to bully feel powerful. Bullying behaviours should be ignored. If someone else in the class takes action, then it is okay for me to ignore the situation. Inactive/passive bystanders are people that are afraid of conflict. We should treat people in the same manner that they treat us. Ask students to consider one or more of the following statements and come up with counter-examples of a time when this would not be the case. A counter-example is a statement/example that disproves a given or implied general statement. Remind the students to give reasons for their responses.

Wellbeing in action….. Say NO to bullying! Be a super power by showing one strategy that you can use to stop bullying. In groups, make up role plays that demonstrate strategies to stop: Physical bullying Verbal bullying Cyber bullying Yr 2 may need to be told which strategies are appropriate. Yrs 3-6 should be able to choose appropriate strategies.

Wellbeing at Oakhill Drive: The ‘Buddy Bench’ When might a student go to sit on the ‘buddy bench’? Why do you think the ‘buddy bench’ colourful? What could you do to help someone on the buddy bench? What could you do to help them find a solution to how they are feeling? Refer to Buddy Bench handout from previous lessons

Believe in yourself! “If they don't like you for being yourself, be yourself even more.”  Taylor Swift True Colours Discuss the quote. Play the song and reflect on messages.
