Linking verb Connects a noun or a pronoun to a word that describes it; expresses a state of being to be verbs “multiple personality” verbs appear become feel grow look remain seem smell sound stay taste turn am are is was were be being been I tasted the soup. Linking verb or action verb? Find the verb in each sentence.  Then tell whether it is an action or linking verb. The ghost appeared in the doorway. Bill became the president of the student council. Jenny looks at the pictures in the book. The tree grows every day. John felt sick after lunch. Steve smelled the flowers. Please stay in the house. The child appeared tired. The cloth on the table felt soft and fuzzy. Jenny looks beautiful in that dress. The radio sounded the emergency alarm. The leftover food from the picnic smelled rotten.

Helping verb “Helps” the main verb verb phrase = helping verb(s) + main verb am are is was were be being been do does did have has had can could will would shall should may might must I should be listening to the teacher. He will bring candy to class.

Another way to remember the helping verbs… Old Mr. Do Once upon a time there was a wealthy merchant named Mr. Do. Mr. Do was very old and very rich. His many relatives were dreaming of the day the old man would die. They wondered which one of them would inherit his money. Finally, one day Mr. Do did die. All the relatives searched his house for a will. They didn't find one. They searched his house three times. They still did not find a will. The relatives did not get one dime of Mr. Do's fortune. The moral: Maybe Mr. Do should have a will. Remember this sentence and you will know how to set up a chart of the 23 helping verbs!
