Water scarcity in Egypt & Dubai By Georgia Munns

Where is Dubai & Egypt located? DUBIA

What is water scarcity and what causes it? Water scarcity affects every continent in the world and about 1.2 billion people don’t have access to clean water. water scarcity is when you don’t have enough water in a certain area or country. it can be caused by the lack of rain fall, climate change, population growth or the increase in pollution. Even though water scarcity affects the whole world it mainly affects Africa and most of Asia.

What are the types of water scarcity? There are two types of water scarcity one is physical and the other one is economic. PHYSICAL: physical water scarcity is when there is physically no water and they are running out fast. So soon there will be no water left. Economic: Economic water scarcity is by far the worst form of water scarcity because it is almost entirely a lack of compassion and good governance that allows it to persist. Economic water scarcity is when the population doesn’t have the right amount of money to put to use an bigger enough source of water.

How does the climate of the country contribute to water scarcity? Egypt The climate of Dubai and Egypt are very dry and they are both located in deserts. in both Egypt and Dubai they are suffering from physical water scarcity. In Egypt it is hot and dry all year. The greatest rainfall happens in the north but no more then 25ml a year the rain evaporates quickly though because it is so hot. In Dubai The summers are hot and humid with temperatures reaching 48 degrees. Dubai

Where are the towns and cities located in relation to water systems? In Egypt the Nile river only makes up 4% of the country however 99% of Egyptians live there. This is because the rest of the country is mainly desert and there aren't many water supplies through that area. In Dubai they still have water problems even though they live on the coast and it is a very popular tourist destination.

What are the social, political, economic & environmental resolutions to the problem? Environmental: They have made a dam called Aswan dam to store all of the water. This helps environmentally because it stores the water for the countries longer so they don’t run out as fast. In Dubai has come up with piolet technologies to help save water while farming. Economic: In Egypt they have found that desalination is not a high priority in solving the crisis because it is so expensive. Political: Egypt is having a fight with Ethiopia because Ethiopia is building a dam that will take most of Egypt's water supply. Social: the people in Egypt are angry that Ethiopia are taking there water so they are stating riots. They could use the waste water for farming but the people are complaining that the dirty water is being used to grow food

How does the population density of the country contribute to water scarcity? 72% of water used in Dubai comes from groundwater, 21% comes from desalination plants and 7% is treated water. The Population growth has risen in the past couple of years in 2005 the population was 5,628,805. I think that this has contributed to the water shortage because there is a higher demand for water then there was before. In Egypt the same problem has happened.

Quiz

What is being done to overcome water scarcity? The solution for Dubai is too build declination plants and for Egypt it Is to put in water conservation techniques and control water pollution develop plans that would install more efficient irrigation techniques, and control water pollution in order to avoid a disaster. Declination plant

What solution will work in Australia? I think that the best solution for Australia is for
