Focus: Students will analyze how prescription drug abuse can be deadly Focus: Students will analyze how prescription drug abuse can be deadly. Goal: To understand prescription drug misuse. Standard: NHES# 1 – Health Promotion Warm-up: 1. What are prescription drugs? Name a few. 2.What do you think misuse of prescription drugs means? Explain. 3. Create a critical thinking question

Notes: 1. Prescription drug misuse occurs when a person takes a prescription medication that is not prescribed to him/her, or takes it for reasons or in dosage other than as prescribed. (***Break down: Medicine that a doctor writes a prescription for is being abused and used for reasons other than for what they are really used for.)

2. The nonmedical use of prescription medications has increased in the past decade and has surpassed all drug usage except marijuana in the United States. **(Break down: Pill use has gone up over the passed ten years over all the other drugs except marijuana.)

3. Staten Island residents have the highest rate of unintentional heroin overdose deaths compared with residents of the other four New York City boroughs.

Notes : Heroin Facts: 4. Heroin is an opioid drug made from seed pods of the Asian Opium Poppy plant. 5. Heroin can be injected, inhaled by snorting or sniffing, or smoked. 6. All three ways to take in heroin will deliver the drug to the brain very rapidly which adds to the risk of addiction.

4. Heroin overdoses usually involve the inability to breathe (hypoxia) 4. Heroin overdoses usually involve the inability to breathe (hypoxia). This can lead to coma and permanent brain damage. 5. People who inject drugs are at a high risk of contracting HIV and hepatitis C (a liver disease) through the transmission through body fluids.

6. Chronic (constant) use leads to physical dependence 6. Chronic (constant) use leads to physical dependence. If a dependant user reduces or stops use of the drug abruptly (suddenly), he or she may experience severe symptoms of withdrawal (EX: restlessness, bone and muscle pain, diarrhea, vomiting…etc).

Short term effects of Heroin

Long term effects of Heroin

Some Facts (READ ONLY) Opioid analgesics (pills) are one of the most commonly misused drugs by New Yorkers aged 12 years and older. From 2000 to 2012, rates of unintentional overdose death from opioid analgesics increased 233 percent. In 2012, 201 New Yorkers died from unintentional opioid analgesic (pills) overdoses — that’s at least one death every other day. Rates of unintentional opioid analgesic (pill) overdose death vary by borough; in 2012, the rate of unintentional opioid analgesic overdose death in Staten Island was more than three times as high as other boroughs.

To address the public health crisis of unintentional opioid analgesic and heroin overdose deaths, the Department of Health has launched a multi-pronged, public health response. These efforts include enhancing the drug surveillance system, promoting safe and careful opioid prescribing among health care providers, promoting overdose prevention by increasing access to naloxone (a chemical used to reverse the effects of narcotic) , improving access to treatment, and conducting public education media campaigns.

Some famous people such as Lil Wayne and Justin Bieber have been arrested with the “drank” (liquid in cup or water bottle) version in public. Youths between ages 12 to 17 showed high misuse of prescription drugs and young adults ages 18 to 25 misuse marijuana first and illegal drugs second. Nearly half of young people who inject heroin surveyed in three recent studies reported abusing prescription opioids (pills) before starting heroin.

Some individuals reported taking up heroin because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than prescription opioids (pills). Some street names are: purple drank, sizzurp, lean, DEX, DXM, Triple C, Barr, or Robo.
