Bob Dylan Fifty Years of Music

Dylan’s Life Born May 24, 1941, in Duluth Minnesota. Attended the University of Minnesota (1 year). Started music career (1962) at the end of his freshman year.

Dylan’s Music He was writing and playing folk music, recognized for anti-war and protest songs. His music genre includes folk, blues, gospel, country, rock and roll, jazz, rockabilly, even swing.

Folk Music His early folk music help influence an American generation. Anti-war /civil right songs like “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “ The Times They Are a-Changin’”. Instantly making him a folk music icon.

Going Electric July 25, 1965, headlining for the Newport Folk Festival. He went electric with the Butterfield blues band. Introducing his folk fans to another genre of music. Rock and Roll.

A New Direction Fans began to boo him regularly at his performances, for going electric. His electric song “Like A Rolling Stone“ created a great amount of controversy. Made it to number one on the billboard charts, one year later.

Dylan and The Band Later renaming themselves as simply “The Band”. Playing and performing with many musicians he discovers Levon and the Hawks. Later renaming themselves as simply “The Band”. Robbie Robertson – guitar Rick Danko – bass, vocals Levon Helm – drums, vocals Garth Hudson – organ Richard Manuel – keyboards, vocals

Dylan and the Movies Co-stared in the 1974 motion picture “Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid” along with Kris Kristofferson, and James Coburn. Recorded “Knockin on Heavens Door” for the film, and it is considered one of the most enduring American rock anthems.
