Phonics

+ Phonics is all about using … skills for reading and spelling knowledge of the alphabet + Learning phonics will help your child to become a good reader and writer.

Teaching and learning Phonics at TBS In school, we follow the ‘Letters and Sounds’ programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the ‘Department for Education and Skills’ which consists of six phases. FS1 FS2 Phase 1 Phase 2 Phase 2 Phase 3 Teaching tools: Jolly Phonics and Education City

Phase 1 There are 7 aspects: Environmental Instrumental sounds Body Percussion Rhythm and rhyme Alliteration Voice sounds Oral blending and segmenting.

Environmental sounds Children develop awareness of sounds in the environment. E.g. listening walks, listening to sounds that different objects can make.

Instrumental sounds These activities promote speaking and listening through the use of musical instruments.

Instrumental sounds These activities promote speaking and listening through the use of musical instruments.

Body Percussion Children develop awareness of sounds and rhymes. E.g. actions songs

Rhythm and rhyme Children develop awareness of rhythm and rhyme in speech. E.g Hickory, Dickory song, Miss Polly had a Dolly, etc.

Alliteration Children explore how different sounds are articulated and develop an understanding of alliteration. E.g. ‘Please may I have some juicy jelly’ or ‘chunky chips’.

Voice Sounds Children explore the different sounds that they can make with their voices. E.g. going down a slide – Wheeee! Hiss like a snake – sssss!

Oral blending and segmenting Children develop oral blending and segmenting. /b,b,b,b/ ball /h,h,h,h/ hop

Phase 2 and Phase 3 The sounds are taught in a specific order (not alphabetically). This enables children to begin building words as early as possible.

How Do I Help My Child at Home Ask your child to tell you the letter sound, not the letter name.

The five basic skills for reading and writing are: Learning the letter sounds

How Do I Help My Child at Home Help your child create his/her own Alphabet Book. Staple some pieces of paper together and ask your child to draw pictures of items that begin with the sound of each alphabet letter.

The five basic skills for reading and writing are: 2. Learning letter formation

Letter Formation It is very important that a child holds their pencil in the correct way. The grip is the same for both left and right-handed children. The pencil should be held in the ‘tripod’ grip between the thumb and first two fingers.

The five basic skills for reading and writing are: 3. Blending & Segmenting

Blending: Children need to be able to hear the separate sounds in a word and then blend them together to say the whole word . Segmenting: Children need to be able to hear a whole word and say every sound that they hear. Watch this  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vsqEGq7VSF4

The five basic skills for reading and writing are: 4. Identifying sounds in words

Sounds in Words Start by having your child listen for the first sound in a word. What’s your name? Salma Sssssssssalma Games like I-Spy are ideal for this. I spy with my little eye, something that begins with …… Next try listening for the end sounds, as the middle sound of a word is the hardest to hear.

The five basic skills for reading and writing are: 5 Spelling the tricky words

Tricky Words There are many words that cannot be blended or segmented because they are irregular. the was said you some
