Historians believe Confucius was China’s first professional teacher Historians believe Confucius was China’s first professional teacher. He charged a fee for students to take his classes. He taught students his views of life and government. Confucius looked for someone to carry on his teachings, but never found anyone to do this.

Confucius died in 479 B.C and he died believing he was a failure because he had not left anyone behind to carry on his teachings. However, his teachings have been followed for many centuries. http://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrB8pw7MRpXhWUALnuWnIlQ;_ylu=X3oDMTBxNG1oMmE2BHNlYwNmcC1hdHRyaWIEc2xrA3J1cmwEaXQD/RV=2/RE=1461363131/RO=11/RU=http%3a%2f%2facelebrationofwomen.org%2f2011%2f09%2fconfucius-551-bc-479-bc-celebrating-the-birth-life%2f/RK=0/RS=efwYfdJ5d76zoHAKkCGVwFyIyA8-

Confucius learned from others and never claimed to be an original thinker. He felt it was his job to pass on forgotten teachings of wise people from an earlier age. Confucius tried to: * persuade rulers to reform *bring peace, prosperity, stability, and prosperity to China’s kingdoms.

Confucius never wrote down his teachings Confucius never wrote down his teachings. His students gathered a collection of his sayings after his death. These writings made up a system of beliefs and values which is called philosophy. https://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play?p=confucianism&vid=5d5bcd0b9d2d6b125f5207396938df41&turl=http%3A%2F%2Ftse4.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DOVP.V2f652c7e547d89522bca01a4dc73a895%26pid%3D15.1%26h%3D168%26w%3D300%26c%3D7%26rs%3D1&rurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DAYQ1hcpUedU&tit=Discovering+China+-+Confucius&c=0&h=168&w=300&l=268&sigr=11b3ae69e&sigt=10tlhpgla&sigi=131gp2o01&ct=p&age=1341606263&fr2=p%3As%2Cv%3Av&fr=yhs-elm-001&hsimp=yhs-001&hspart=elm&type=hdr_ydef&param1=1&param2=f%3D2%26pa%3Dhodor%26a%3Dhdr_ydef&tt=b

This philosophy became known as Confucianism. https://sp.yimg.com/xj/th?id=OIP.M1ae52c2f65bd26ce24a4ba2c380247bfH0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=300&h=300 https://sp.yimg.com/xj/th?id=OIP.M10ef5571543127873c27749cee8db919o0&pid=15.1&P=0&w=300&h=300

Confucianism was only one of several different philosophies in ancient China. Confucianism governed many aspects of life in ancient China.

Confucius lived during a time in which there were many wars Confucius lived during a time in which there were many wars. There was constant fighting between Chinese states, or Kingdom, in order to control the land. Power was the main concern of the rulers, not ruling wisely. Confucius hoped to change the ways of these rulers and return China to a country of peace and order.

The main goal of Confucius was to bring order to society The main goal of Confucius was to bring order to society. * If people were taught to behave properly toward each other, peace and order would result. *Society would prosper.

Confucius felt people should know their place in the family and in society. *Respect people above and below them * Treat others justly *People in authority should set good examples *Follow the 5 human relationships * His thoughts summarized mean, “Do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself”

Confucianism serves as a philosophy and a religion Confucianism serves as a philosophy and a religion. The teachings of Confucianism * helped guide people in how to behave * people were part of a moral community * practiced this along with other existing religious traditions

*Most Chinese people believed that life should be lived in harmony with nature. *Happiness was achieved by living a balanced life. *A religious philosophy called TAOISM supported these ideas.

Taoism was based on the on the writings of Laozi, a Chinese thinker who lived in the 500’s B.C. The Taoists loved nature, and they believed in living a simple and selfless life. https://app.discoveryeducation.com/learn/videos/39127256-913A-450B-86EE-A5692BAEE76A?hasLocalHost=false

The teachings of Confucius came to have a major effect on Chinese government. They became a part of the basic training for members of the civil service. The civil service is the group of people who carry out the work of the government.

Before the ideas of Confucius, government positions were held by sons of powerful people. After Confucius, any man could hold a government position based on merit, or how well he did his job or how well he was qualified. Candidates for these jobs had to take and pass exams for the positions they applied for.
