TOPIC: Regulation AIM: What are some disorders of the Nervous System?

Damage to the brain 1. Stroke

Blood vessel in brain blocked or burst

Oxygenated blood doesn’t reach part of the brain

2. Meningitis Inflammation of membranes that surround brain or spinal cord

There are three layers of meninges around the brain and spinal cord There are three layers of meninges around the brain and spinal cord. The outer layer, the dura mater, is tough white fibrous connective tissue. The middle layer of meninges is arachnoid, a thin layer with numerous threadlike strands attaching it to the innermost layer. The space under the arachnoid, the subarachnoid space, is filled with cerebrospinal fluid and contains blood vessels. The pia mater is the innermost layer of meninges. This thin, delicate membrane is tightly bound to the surface of the brain and spinal cord and cannot be dissected away without damaging the surface.

Can be viral or bacterial

3. Polio Viral disease of the CNS that can cause paralysis

Prevented by immunization

1950’s Dr. Jonas Salk, developer of the first polio vaccine, 1955.

In this March of Dimes promotional photograph, Elvis Presley receives his polio vaccination in 1956.

Brain damage (cerebrum) just before or after birth (congenital) 4. Cerebral Palsy Brain damage (cerebrum) just before or after birth (congenital) Affects motor control
