What is OSHA? OSHA — Occupational Safety and Health Administration OSHA’s Job — This organization is responsible for protecting American workers. Main Goal — To make sure every worker is safe on the job.
OSHA Regulations OSHA has two main responsibilities To set safety related standards To inspect business or employment workplaces to ensure that the employer provides a safe and healthful environment
Standards Examples of OSHA standards Personal protective equipment if required for job performance must be provided by the employer. Hazardous Materials: manufacturers of hazardous chemical materials must evaluate the product(s) for danger. If a product(s) is deemed to be hazardous the item must be labeled and meet the requirements of the OSHA Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). An employer must provide all employees access to any records of exposure to toxic materials.
OSHA and the EPA OSHA - State agencies require employers to notify employees of the occupational health risks and hazards present in the workplace. EPA - US Environmental Protection Agency whose mission is to protect human health and the environment – air, water and land on which life depends. This is done by enforcing federal laws governing the use and handling of hazardous materials.
Terminology Material Safety Data Sheet: Detailed information bulletin prepared by the manufacturer or importer of a chemical that provides specific information about the product.
What is a MSDS? Material Safety Data Sheet is a form used to maintain the information on a chemical used within your facility MSDS books are a combination of all of the Chemical information for all of the products used. This book is an important part of workplace safety
Where do I find them? Your chemical company should provide them for you but…….. If you don’t have information on a chemical in your establishment: The most common place is the internet If you can’t find it online you can call the company directly and they will provide you with their official MSDS.
