Przemyslaw Pawluk George Brown College Using Video as a Support in Face-to-Face Information Technology Courses Przemyslaw Pawluk George Brown College Tom Tsiliopoulos Centennial College
Agenda Video usage How we did it Observations and results Issues and problems
Video usage Demonstration videos, Narrative videos Recorded lecture sessions Tutored video instructions
Video usage Medicine Cooking Engineering Electronics
Our goal Providing additional support to students in IT courses Allowing students to review the lab exercises on their own pace Minimize the overhead
Tools Most recent version of Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, or Safari Operating system: Windows 7+, Mac OS X 10.7+, Ubuntu 10+, or Linux OS 11+ (64-bit) Internet connection with 1+ Mbps
How we did it Used video as a supporting technology in a face-to-face class Recording session in the lab live Live streaming allowing students (limited number) to watch live from home Length of video ~ 50 min Published immediately after the session No post-production
Feedback Most of the viewers (97%) did access the recording on- demand Growing interest in watching the live streaming of the session Students do not watch the entire recording in one session overall average view duration is 5.6 min for live streaming the average view duration is 18 min
Statistics Most of the students watch the video shortly before the tests Only small group uses this support in their regular practice Majority accesses the video from the computer (desktop/laptop)
Issues Postproduction cost: adding captions, trimming, adding overlays 1:5 ratio (one minute video: five minutes in postproduction) Automated captioning is inaccurate Blackboard not visible in video when capturing screen Many faculty members are not used to recording, walk away from the microphone which impacts the quality of the video
Conclusion Video is proven to work in various domains Helps with skills acquisition allowing students to watch specific task when and where they need the instructions Our stats show that students use video as a last-minute support Some students access live streaming
