MAP Growth NWEA Northwest Evaluation Association

Our transition to the MAP Growth assessments As you may recall, PA 306 (Third Grade Reading Legislation) required the administration of a screening (or initial) assessment within the first 30 days of the school year. This required us to identify an assessment from the MDE’s list of approved assessments. Our goal was to identify an assessment that would give us meaningful data that would help teachers make instructional decisions. Once we identified that MAP Growth assessment for use as the initial assessment in reading, it was determined we would use the same assessment for math as well. The MAP Growth Reading and Math assessments will replace the SLRA and SLMA.

MAP Growth Administration by Grade Level MAP Growth Reading and Math K-2 Fall and Winter administered to grades K-2 Spring administered to grades K-1 Replaces SLRA and SLMA MAP Growth Reading and Math 2-5 Fall and Winter administered to grades 3-5 Spring administered to grades 2-5 MAP Growth Language Winter and Spring administered to grades 3-5 Replaces multiple choice portion of Revising and Editing

Adaptive Assessment MAP Growth is a computer-adaptive test. If a student answers a question correctly, the next question is more challenging. If they answer incorrectly, the next one is easier. This type of assessment challenges top performers without overwhelming students whose skills are below grade level. © Northwest Evaluation Association 2015 | NWEA.org 09/15

Normative Data: Bringing Context to the Data Grade-level norms Typical performance Beginning, middle, and end of year NWEA provides schools with norms every three years. This is anonymous data from more than 10 million students around the country. Knowing the top, middle, and bottom scores of all these students combined allows teachers to compare where one student is relative to other students and helps them identify how to help students grow. © Northwest Evaluation Association 2016 | NWEA.org 08/16

Instructional Level versus Mastery The MAP test: Provides information about the instructional level of the student Provides a road map for students toward achieving mastery Is not a test for determining mastery of skills © Northwest Evaluation Association 2016 | NWEA.org 08/16

Professional Learning Plan for MAP Growth Assessments Today’s professional learning will focus on everything you need to know for administration of the assessment. Immediately following the first administration of the assessment, professional learning will be provided on interpretation of the data. Ongoing professional learning will take place over the course of the year as we get additional data from the later administrations.

Parent Communication Plan for MAP Growth Assessments The district is developing communication to be shared with families about the MAP Growth assessment. We are also developing the format for parent reports on student scores. Similar to the procedures we used previously with SLRA and SLMA, parent reports on student scores will not be sent until the window for the assessment has closed. We will share that information with parents in our initial communication.
