Exploring New Territories Wiki Spaces WWW.WikiSpaces.com is a website available to teachers for free. Can be used to easily create websites with desired information. We will be using a Wiki later in this presentation so you can see the functionality.
Exploring New Territories Let’s Build A Kid In groups of 4-5, use a chart paper and markers to create your “Student” Draw the student in the middle of the page List students strengths, limitations, Learning style, physical/cognitive abilities, and social skill levels. Visual auditory Kinesthetic You are now going to “create” a student that will be used for the next part of the presentation. So you can think about characteristics of a student whom you are having difficulty creating appropriate lessons and activities. Do not speak in specifics: no names! It can be a combination of characteristics…so for example….
Universal Design for Learning Strategies Exploring New Territories Universal Design for Learning Strategies Start with manageable curriculum units: i.e. math lesson Identify the goals of the unit: the standards or access points Identify what the student needs to do to show mastery of the standard Determine what the instructional barriers are for your student: Determine what tools would help the student to be able to actively participate/engage in the lesson. Determine how goals, methods and assessments can be adjusted.
Exploring New Territories Assistive Technology Becomes a component when the student is having difficulty achieving an IEP goal. AT is specific to an activity/goal (i.e. the student has good comprehension when she hears the information, but cannot read on her own. So use a digital reader) Think in terms of SETT: Student, Environment, Task, Tool The MCSD AT Referral Form: help fill out the information so the AT Team understands what assistance you are asking for from them.
