and how to form them in French Regular -er verbs and how to form them in French

How to recognise er verbs When you look at this list, what do all the verbs have? Regarder to watch Manger to eat Travailler to work Porter to carry Jouer to play Ecouter to listen to

How to use these verbs When we have er on the end of a verb, it means to ……. So, regarder means to watch. We want to be able to say:- I watch we watch you (sg) watch you (pl) watch he watches they (m) watch she watches they (f) watch one watches

To do this we have to follow a pattern. 1. Remove the er 2. Decide who is doing the action of the verb 3. Add the correct ending to the stem

Let’s look at the endings we will need to use. je e tu es il e elle e on e nous ons vous ez ils ent elles ent

For our example we will look at regarder. je regarde tu regardes il regarde elle regarde on regarde nous regardons vous regardez ils regardent elles regardent

What were the endings? je e tu es il e elle e on e nous ons vous ez ils ent elles ent

Now let’s try another “er” verb. je joue tu joues il joue elle joue on joue nous jouons vous jouez ils jouent elles jouent

Jouer means to play How would I say “I play” in French? Je joue He plays Il joue We play Nous jouons She plays Elle joue

Now try these. Write the answers in your books. Porter = to carry 1. He carries 2. They (m) carry 3. You (sg) carry 4. I carry 5. You (pl) carry 6. We carry 7. One carries How did you do?

Match your answers with these! 1.He carries il porte 2.They (m) carry ils portent 3.You (sg) carry tu portes 4.I carry je porte 5.You (pl) carry vous portez 6.We carry nous portons 7.One carries on porte

Manger has a sting in the tail! Can you notice anything different? je mange tu manges il mange elle mange on mange To eat nous mangeons vous mangez ils mangent elles mangent

“cer” verbs have something different about them, too. Commencer je commence tu commences il commences elle commence on commence To begin nous commençons vous commencez ils commencent elles commencent
