An Introduction to AMCA

Learning Objectives Audience will hear about An Overview of AMCA The AMCA Certified Ratings Program AMCA Membership AMCA Standards and Publications AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program Education and Advocacy Here are the things we will be going over today.

An Overview of AMCA

An Overview of AMCA Air Movement and Control Association International Not-for-profit manufacturers association with roots going back to1917 Mission is to promote the health, growth and integrity of the industry More than 350 member companies worldwide

An Overview of AMCA 1917 – Fan manufacturers created the association History Lesson 1917 – Fan manufacturers created the association 1955 – Three associations merged to become AMCA 1957 – AMCA Certified Ratings Program initiated 1977 – Louvers & dampers were added 1996 – The word “International” was officially added to the AMCA name 2011 – European AMCA established 2011 – Asia AMCA established An established organization with origins dating back to 1917. In 1955, the National Association of Fan Manufacturers, Power Fan Manufacturers Association and the Industrial Unit Heater Association merged to become the Air Moving and Conditioning Association (AMCA). With the inclusion of louvers and dampers in the association’s scope, the name was changed to the Air Movement and Control Association in 1977. As more manufacturers around the world wanted to be involved, AMCA decided to focus on adding resources to support other regions. The word “international” was added in 1996 to reflect this new mindset.

An Overview of AMCA AMCA’s member products are used in Commercial ventilation systems Industrial facilities and processes Data centers and high-tech facilities Power plants Gas, oil, mining and other heavy industries Food processing Waste water treatment … and more

An Overview of AMCA AMCA contributes to the industry by 1. Developing and disseminating technical information Product-rating test standards Application guides and handbooks White papers, technical articles and educational seminars AMCA develops and disseminates… Test standards Application guides White papers Seminars Product application research

An Overview of AMCA AMCA contributes to the industry by 2. Advocating for members and the industry: Energy efficiency Fire and life safety Acoustics Indoor environmental quality Codes, standards and regulations High performance air systems AMCA advocates for members, giving them a voice in discussions with… Regulatory bodies Building specification and code developers And AMCA verifies performance data via the AMCA certified ratings program, the primary subject of this presentation

An Overview of AMCA AMCA contributes to the industry by 3. Administering product certification programs AMCA Certified Ratings Program (worldwide) European Commission 327 Fan Efficiency compliance verification AMCA listing and labeling program for U.S./state/regional building codes And AMCA verifies performance data via the AMCA certified ratings program

The AMCA Certified Ratings Program

The AMCA Certified Ratings Program How AMCA’s third-party Certified Ratings System works: Companies send products to AMCA for testing AMCA tests products for parameters specified AMCA checks its data against manufacturer literature Periodic check tests in AMCA laboratory ensures certifications are valid over time The AMCA CRP was developed in response to a need for validated product performance ratings Buyers, specifiers, and users of air movement and control devices needed to know they were getting what they paid for. AMCA created the CRP to provide third-party verification of manufacturer data, and it 1. Companies send products to the AMCA laboratory for testing, requesting certification for performance parameters 2. AMCA tests products for parameters specified by the manufacturer 3. AMCA checks its test data against the data the manufacturer provided to verify it is the same, within a certain tolerance Only after the product has been tested and the manufacturer’s cataloged ratings have been approved can manufacturers display the AMCA seal for the parameters tested.

The AMCA Certified Ratings Program After certification, the product Is licensed to bear AMCA’s seal Is listed in AMCA’s online database www.amca.org/certified After certification, The product is licensed to bear AMCA’s seal for the performance specified and tested The product can be listed in AMCA’s online database of certified products, which specifiers may visit to find products they can count on

The AMCA Certified Ratings Program Some background on the program Over 50 years old 21 types of products certified 3,350 certified products 240 AMCA member companies in 27 countries participate in program Testing is done in AMCA-accredited independent and manufacturer laboratories Some background on the program It has been around for over 50 years There are 21 types of products that AMCA certifies AMCA has certified 3,350 products There are 240 AMCA members that participate in program AMCA has a program to accredit labs that operate independently, providing more options to potential CRP participants

The AMCA Certified Ratings Program The CRP is growing In 2015, there were 3349 total licensed products

AMCA Membership

AMCA Membership Certified Ratings Program Laboratory testing Benefits: Certified Ratings Program Laboratory testing Education programs, engineering conferences Statistics program (North America) Code development Reduced pricing for services Vote on AMCA documents Participate on publication committees Manufacturers of air movement and air control products join AMCA for many reasons, but the two most important reasons are the CRP and the Laboratory Testing. Besides lab services, members can take advantage of conference, seminars, document developing committee membership, and more.

AMCA Membership How to join Must manufacture products within AMCA’s scope Fill out an application Site visit AMCA Board of Directors vote To become an AMCA member, a company must manufacture products within AMCA’s scope. The AMCA website lists products in scope and links to a request for an application. Once your application is complete, AMCA will visit the company to verify they manufacture product Finally, the board of directors votes on the request for membership

AMCA Standards and Publications

AMCA Standards and Publications AMCA publishes a variety of documents, such as Handbooks, application manuals and CRP guidelines (called “AMCA Publications”) American national standards for testing air products (called “AMCA Standards”) White papers Educational materials Documents are available at www.amca.org/store

AMCA Standards and Publications Who can work on what kinds of documents: Anyone can join an American national standard developing committee Only AMCA members can join an AMCA publication developing committee Only AMCA members can vote to approve or disapprove at some of the higher document approval levels One company = one vote Anyone is invited to join a technical committee that will create a standard However, only employees of AMCA member companies can join technical committees that create AMCA publications (documents that are not standards) And only representatives of member companies will be sent ballots once the technical committee approves the document and it continues through the approval process. Now, for both standards and publications, each company only can have one vote on each ballot.

AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program

AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program A means for laboratories to be qualified to test products in accordance with AMCA standard test methods The AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program provides a means for laboratories to be qualified for testing of products in accordance with appropriate AMCA standard test methods or other test methods recognized by AMCA.

AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program Steps to becoming an accredited lab Fill out an application AMCA arranges a witness test of a product in the applicant’s laboratory AMCA will perform a check test on the product in their lab and issue a test report If results are within tolerances, AMCA staff will evaluate applicant’s test reports Staff will accredit the lab if all steps result in approval Steps to becoming an accredited lab Fill out an application AMCA arranges a witness test of a product in the applicant’s laboratory AMCA will perform a check test on the product in their lab and issue a test report If the check test results are within the check test tolerances, AMCA technical staff will indicate if any changes to your test report are required in order to comply with the program. Staff will accredit the lab if all steps result in approval

AMCA Laboratory Accreditation Program Here are some examples of AMCA’s accredited labs around the world
