Song of Songs

Three Ways to Interpret Literally = It’s just an old fashioned love song Why is it in the Bible? 2:7 Daughters of Jerusalem, I charge you (you – is masculine) Typical = the ones referred to in the Song are types (representative) of something else Doesn’t really seem to fit Solomon Allegory = the words have a deeper meaning that what they say literally This one actually seems to best This may also be a picture of Christ and his love for the Church

Song of Songs 1:1–2:2 1. Why might God devote an entire book of the Bible to the subject of romantic love?  This pictures love between a husband and a wife. It is often multifaceted.  This same is true for Jesus and His Church 2. The lover and beloved have friends and enemies. How does this describe Christ and his church?  The Church also has enemies. 3. How does God woo us into a closer, more intimate relationship with him? It is His Gospel, not the law. Imagine a marriage based on law not Gospel love

Song of Songs 2:3-15 1. The embrace of the beloved and the lover in verse 6 is cut short. In what sense does the church feel that the fulfillment of its relationship with the Lord is cut short even now?  The full relationship with Christ is not yet Here.  Jewish wedding custom was that the two were married/engaged but did not share a home for a time.  2:7 repeats throughout the Song. We have not made it to the Wedding Feast in heaven yet. 2. There are many people and things that try to come between Christ and his church. Can you name some? Satan and anyone who helps him. False ideas which all tempt us into Spiritual adultery

Song of Songs 2:16–3:1-11 1. Can a Christian claim to have mutual ownership with God? If so, how? (See Deuteronomy 6:13,15; Galatians 3:26,27; Isaiah 42:8.)  WE belong to Christ and He is now our Lord, Savior, God  2. The lover was not with the beloved, and she could not find him. How does this reflect how Christians think of their Lord? How easy was it for the beloved to find the lover?  We often loose God because we neglect Him  He is never far 3. Solomon is the son of David who enters the scene in 3:6-11. What other Son of David is always present when the church speaks of its love for the Lord? Jesus

Song of Songs 4:1-15 Compare verse 7 with Ephesians 5:25-27. What lesson does the Song of Songs and the Ephesian verses teach us about Christ and the church? This comparison helps us to more fully understand God’s love for us. He sees us as radiant, blameless, holy, no stain, wrinkle or any blemish With this understanding, how does this help us focus on the work of the Church?

Song of Songs 4:16–5:16 1. Consider ancient marriage customs in which husband and wife were married but not allowed to be together as husband and wife until the proper time. When will Christ and the church be completely able to enjoy each other’s presence?  In heaven 2. Describe a time in your life when you were slow to do the Lord’s will. What problem did that cause? How did that affect your love for the Lord? We are often slow to receive the blessings the Lord has in store for us. Think church attendance, Bible study etc. We only suffer for it At times the suffering helps to bring us back and appreciate what we have

Song of Songs 6,7 The separation caused by the beloved’s lethargy is over. What state of affairs quickly returns? Why does this happen? How is the same thing true in God’s church? They are soon back together It is certainly reflective of God’s grace. Christ is never far away. We live under grace not law

Song of Songs 8 1. The beloved says that love is as strong as death. How is this a statement of comfort to us?  Three things are certain in life, death, taxes and ____________?  God’s love for us 2. The world does not think the church is beautiful, and it scorns the church. How should the church answer the world? Note the confidence the beloved expresses in verse 10. Does anything else matter? When two people are in love, does what others think really matter? 3. Why read this every year at the Passover? Strengthen marriages? Remind people of God’s love for them.
