Important Dates: Application deadline – Friday, December 9, 2016 Notification of acceptance, first 13 schools to apply - Week of December 12, 2016 Deadline to request a waste assessment - February 3, 2017 Deadline for submitting completed 5R’s Activities: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot, & Reveal (Admin & Promo) – May 12, 2017 Review of results and notification to awardees – First Week of June 2017 Awards presented at the Salinas Valley Recycles Board Meeting on August 17, 2017

Only use clear liners in recycling bins (no black trash bags). (Recycling containers and posters will be provided by Salinas Valley Recycles after a waste assessment is completed). This group will also be responsible for continuing to educate students on what is and isn’t recyclable. MANDATORY ACTIVITY Separate yard trimmings from garbage for composting. This can be accomplished by signing up for yard waste collection service with your garbage and recycling hauler or demonstrate existing collection plans (see page 4 for hauler information).

Encourage students to drink all the milk and eat all the food. Milk waste liquids can be dispose of down sewer drain. (Prevention is more important than diverting the leftover milk. School can initiate a campaign to reduce milk waste or food waste by encouraging students to drink all or eat all and only take what they need). Weight all the food and milk to get accurate results.
