Palabras afirmativas y negativas Affirmative and Negative words

Negation Affirmative Statements: I speak Spanish. = He is an athlete. = Negative Statements: They don’t understand.= We don’t play golf. = Hablo español. Él es atleta. Ellos no entienden. No jugamos al golf.

In Spanish, every affirmative word has a negative counterpart. If an answer to a question is negative, two negative words must be used. ¿Hablas español? (No, I don’t speak Spanish.) ¿Siempre estudias? (No, I never study.) In Spanish, every affirmative word has a negative counterpart. No, yo no hablo español. No, yo nunca estudio.

You can form a negative statement two ways: Put the negative word before the verb. Nobody speaks. = Alfredo never dances. = Put the negative word after the verb. If you do this, you must also place “no” before the verb. Nadie habla. Alfredo nunca baila. No habla nadie. Alfredo no baila nunca.

In Spanish, double negatives must be used In Spanish, double negatives must be used. If one word is negative, everything must be negative. (This is different than our English rules.) María doesn’t need anything. Correct  María no necesita nada. Incorrect  Maria no necesita algo. **It is possible to have more than two negatives in a Spanish sentence.

My mom wants to buy something at the mall. We don’t know anyone in class. She doesn’t know anything about digital cameras. You (fam.) also navigate the Internet. We don’t want anything for the moment. I always burn CDs. My family never takes photos. Raquel and Monica don’t sunbathe either.
