Let’s Fight for Healthier Kids Join the Movement: Fuel Up to Play 60

The Issue: Childhood Obesity Some experts warn that this is the first generation that won’t outlive their parents. Overweight Kids Often Become Obese, Unhealthy Adults It’s no secret – today’s youth is overfed and undernourished Some experts warn that this is the first generation that won’t outlive their parents. Child wellness is the biggest topic of the day, and the pressure continues to build to find solutions More than just obesity – the dialogue and solutions need to address the larger issue of overall child wellness Today’s Youth are Overweight, Undernourished. It’s Serious, But Solvable.

The Solution: Begins with Schools and SNA Members America’s schools reach over 55 million kids a day, 180 days a year 30 million school lunches served every day 50% of daily energy intake consumed at school Research shows that good nutrition and physical activity positively affects academic achievement Schools are the battleground, because about 55 million kids are in schools five days a week, 200 days a year, and the government has a role is deciding what kids eat at school… An environment even more challenging now as decisions are being made about policy and about how money is spent in school feeding And Dairy can be part of the solution: Dairy Foods provide a good or excellent source of 9 nutrients: Calcium, potassium, phosphorus, protein, vitamins A, D and B12, riboflavin and niacin In addition to bone health, a large and growing body of evidence shows adequate dairy food intake in children may reduce the rist of obesity, osteoporosis and hypertension Participation in school meal programs increase intake of a variety of essential nutrients, an important contributor to optimal academic performance. Tasty options such as low-fat or fat-free flavored milk, cheese and yogurt help meet dairy intake recommendations in Child Nutrition Programs, and promote other Food Groups to Encourage 3 3

Health Partners Business Partners At the center of the solution is Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school program that motivates and rewards students to make sustainable changes including access to healthier foods – including dairy – and 60 minutes of physical activity each day. This is a HUGE program, a comprehensive approach to making the next generation a healthier one, totally unique, and attracting lots of partners First was NFL which added star power and physical activity programs and the local involvement of all 32 NFL teams Seven health and nutrition partners (including SNA along with ADA, AAP, AAFP, NMA, NHMA, AFHK) have signed on in support, along with a growing list of business partners, adding their resources to our effort, which makes it bigger and broader while taking some of the pressure off of dairy farmers And USDA has also signed on as a partner to add the support of the government agency that manages school feeding programs

Fuel Up to Play 60 Goals Students are motivated to make better food choices – such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains and dairy – and be more physically active before, during and after school Schools have increased access to nutrient-rich foods and sustained opportunities for physical activity Continually improve school environments and school stakeholders are supportive of nutrient-rich foods and physical activity The goals for Fuel Up To Play 60 are straightforward – We want to help you improve the school environment that can promote healthy food choices and physical activity opportunities Students will not only have access to more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy, but they will also want to select them as their food choices The same would be for physical activity opportunities and the desire to want to participate in physical activities The support of the school stakeholders needs to be there for the students and the changes needed in the school environment 5

What Makes Fuel Up to Play 60 Unique? Youth Involved Pilot Market testing and ongoing, extensive research with youth and schools to inform program development, ensuring components are relevant and effective. A Comprehensive Approach Fuel Up to Play 60 combines nutrition and physical activity, teaching youth the whole story of healthy living. With all the attention around child health, there are many programs available that address the issue. There are several attributes to the Fuel Up To Play 60 program that makes it stand out from other programs. Youth Involvement in the Development of the Program There has been extensive testing of the program with students and adults in the schools that are implementing the program. This information is included in the continuing evolution of the program to make sure it is effective and achieving the desired results. Nutrition and Physical Activity Balance Nutrition is only half the equation that needs to be addressed when focusing on child health; Fuel Up To Play 60 not only includes nutrition, but also physical activity strategies. These are both requirements for being recognized as a HealthierUS School, so strategies in Fuel Up To Play 60 can help schools achieve that status. Partner Support SNA is one of several health and nutrition partners supporting activation of Fuel Up To Play 60 in schools. Additionally, business and community leaders are getting involved at a national and local level. Powerful Partners Fuel Up to Play 60 offers bold leadership through partnership and support involving many organizations and business leaders.

What Makes Fuel Up to Play 60 Unique? Customization This ongoing social marketing program goes beyond promotions to influence actual behavior change, using customizable components. National Issues, Local Solutions Because Fuel Up to Play 60 aims at long-term change, it utilizes ongoing support and participation at the grassroots level. Although Fuel Up To Play 60 has reached over 60,000 schools, the flexibility is there for each school to focus on the strategies that best fit their situation. The program works differently in every school. Students work with adults to motivate their peers to making change within the school. Although child health is a national issue, change can start at the local level in your community. Schools are being re-engaged for the 2010-11 school year with competitive grants and awards available to schools that perform. Massive Reach In the 2009-2010 school year, 60,000 schools enrolled in Fuel Up to Play 60. All schools are offered nationwide grants and rewards.

What National Leaders, Students and School Stakeholders Have to Say “Increasing access to more nutrient-rich foods and physical activity in America’s schools is no simple task, and will require the combined effort of private and public interests.” –Tom Vilsack, Secretary, U.S. Department of Agriculture “In the school setting, Fuel Up to Play 60 is already demonstrating that children want to, and will continue to, contribute to improving the health of their school.” – Dr. David Satcher, 16th U.S. Surgeon General “Through Fuel Up to Play 60, we want young people to discover that healthy habits can be both fun and empowering.” – Roger Goodell, Commissioner, NFL “Fuel Up to Play 60 to me means that you eat healthy food to fuel yourself up and then you can go play…for 60 minutes a day, so you can be a healthy person and when you grow up, be even fitter.” – Nikki, 6th grade, Student Team Member, Youth Ambassador The support from national leaders, such as Secretary Vislack, former Surgeon General Satcher and Commissioner Goddell has helped But the endorsements don’t stop there – students and advisors in the school also believe in the program. As Nancy Rice said, this is a great partnership with SNA and its members to support your efforts in promoting healthy school environments. “It’s one thing for a health teacher to stand up and say [eat healthy and exercise], but when you have kids encouraging kids to make good choices and good decisions, now you’re talking some real power.” – Ric Davies, Health Teacher, Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisor "This program is a wonderful way for school nutrition staff and others within the school community to partner together to create healthy school environments." Nancy Rice, President School Nutrition Association, 2010-2011
