Mrs. Hein’s Weekly Newsletter February 8th, 2013 Math This week we have been learning about ordering events for first, next, and last. We have also learned how to tell time on an analog and a digital clock. We are telling time on the hour. We know the parts of a clock. We are also learning about how some things take more time or less time to do. Reader’s Club During our small group reading time this week our stories talked about nature and how we can help take care of nature. We talked again about the difference between fantasy and realism. Ask your kiddo about the two books they read this week. We illustrated and wrote about I can…you? We had fun playing a cube word maker game to make real and nonsense words. We worked on Starfall on the computers. Keep working on those reading and writing skills at home too. Report Cards Report cards came home today in the purple folders. Please be sure to read the directions stapled on the front cover letting you know what to keep and what to send back to school. Please return all folders by Wednesday, February 13th. Please be sure to go over with your child his/her strengths and areas they need to work on. Thank You! Reminders and info! Monday, February 11th ~ NO Sound/letter binders will go home. Monday, February 8th ` NO SCHOOL – Presidents Day Language Arts We continued to explore our unit What can I learn when I explore the outdoors! We are learning about our natural resources and the weather and seasons! Our Focus Question this week is: What do I see in nature? Our new one will be How can I help take care of nature? Ask your child to tell you different ways to help keep our environment clean. Also, this week’s reading strategy has been all about visualizing; seeing a picture in your mind about what you are reading. We continue to work on how to determine the difference between a FACT and an OPINION and how to use context clues. Please continue to practice this at home as well! Letters for the Week: We are working on sounds again in words and we are working on letters Nn and Oo for beginning, middle, and ending sounds. Your child is getting very good at sounds in isolation but keep encouraging them to sound out complete words and blend the sounds together. Letter and Sound binders WILL NOT go home next week. SIGHT WORDS We introduced the sight word has this week. Please use the black sight word folders to practice, as well as the yellow and green sight words in bags that came home last week. New charts will be added next week. Also, as we put new words in weekly, please be sure that your child keeps this folder in his/her backpack. Thank You!
