RTI- Response to Intervention Hobgood Elementary-Murfreesboro City Schools…Hobgood Intervention Team

What is RTI? RTI stands for Response to Instruction/Interventions and refers to a set of ideas focused on how to help all children be successful in school. RTI addresses areas of need in both reading and math.

What are the goals of RTI? For the school to provide effective teaching that fits the academic needs of each student. For the school to make sure the classroom environment is the best possible to accommodate all student needs. To help all students meet grade level standards. To individualize instruction for students in order to fill in gaps in academics or to build on student strengths.

What are the TIERS of RTI? Tier 1 – High quality, explicit instruction and behavior support for all students in the school (regular classroom instruction) Tier 2 – Additional interventions for students who need more help on specific skills (walk to reading-students are grouped based on skills they need to work on…students are working with classroom teachers or interventionists during this time) Tier 3 – Interventions designed to address the unique needs of an individual student (10% and below in benchmark testing…students will work with interventionists…students that are not in 10% or below are working with classroom teachers on skills and enrichment.)

How are interventions determined? Interventionists give three benchmark tests throughout the year(Fall, Winter, Spring)…the tests help identify areas of deficit or concern. The tests look for areas of deficit in… Basic reading skills (letters, letter sounds, decoding) Reading Comprehension Reading Fluency Math Calculation Math Problem Solving

After testing… After benchmark testing… interventionists, classroom teachers, and administration review tests along with classroom performance in order to determine the best interventions for all students. For students that are struggling or need additional support, they will work with an interventionist in a small group setting during Tier 2 and Tier 3 instruction. Teachers, interventionists, and administration meet every 4 weeks to review student progress in each grade-level. If there is no student progress, changes will be made in child’s program.

What questions can parents ask? Is my child successful? How do I know? If not, why and what can we do differently? If needed, how is additional help going to be provided? By whom? How often? For how long? What can I do to help with the interventions for my child? How will I know if interventions are working?

What do I do if my child is struggling? Talk with your child’s teacher Ask for regular progress reports in the areas of difficulty Celebrate when progress is made; ask questions when there is little or no progress Set up a time to meet with one of the interventionists to see what you can do at home to support your child’s needs

Important points to remember: Every student in the school, from Kindergarten to the 6th grade are involved in RTI. Interventions are provided through general education resources so that all students can be successful. For students who need ongoing intensive or individualized help to maintain progress, a support team within the school will meet to determine what else can be done to best meet the needs of that student.
