The students will begin this nine weeks in reading by learning about the various types of literature, fantasy, realistic fiction, and nonfiction. They will sequence events, compare & contrast, identify text features all while learning how to infer, predict, make connections, and summarize. These skills will continuously throughout the year. In language arts, they will begin writing in their journals. They will write personal narratives with a beginning, middle, and end. Writing complete sentences with periods, question marks, singular, and plural nouns will be taught as well. Math This month, we are learning about place value. We are starting with 3-digit numbers and will work our way up to 4-digit numbers up to 1,200. We will learn how to compare and order these numbers, as well as find them on a number line. We will find missing numbers on open number lines and number lines that count by patterns. We will also practice our basic addition facts daily, to build fluency! Social Studies Citizenship, roles & leaders in the government, maps & globes, and history & community influences will be covered this 9 weeks. Science We start science by learning about what scientists are and what they do, what kinds of scientists there are, the types of tools they use, how they stay safe, and the process they use to solve problems. We will also start our second unit, which teaches the properties of matter, including the different states of matter.
