Bell Ringer On your own or with a partner, think about a time when you went on vacation or travelled out of town. Brainstorm: List the technology that made it easier for you than someone who might have made this same trip 100 years ago. How did you get there? What did you do? Where did you eat? What form(s) of communication did you use?

The Age of Invention

Social, economic, and technological Advancements changed American life & Improved our standard of living.

Four major changes to American society included: Increased factory & labor productivity. Transportation (including the use of the automobile). Improved communication. Rural electrification.

Technology extended progress into all areas of American life, including neglected rural areas.

Workers from the Rural Electrification Administration putting in a pole, Brown County, Kansas. This was the first rural electrical line in Kansas. (1938)

Review: How did industrialization and the rise of big business influence life on farms and in cities?

Rise of mechanization helped industries all over the United States to grow. Examples you already know… Carnegie : Steel Rockefeller: Oil Vanderbilt: Railroads and Shipping

Inventions That Improved Transportation

Henry Ford and the use of the assembly line: Henry Ford did not invent the assembly line…he improved it by making it move.

Henry Ford’s Model T will be the U.S.’s first affordable automobile. He calls it the “Everyman’s Car.”

by 1924 there is a Model T built every 24 seconds!!! America is on the MOVE !!! 300,000 are sold in 1913… by 1924 there is a Model T built every 24 seconds!!!

Results of improved transportation brought about by affordable automobiles: Greater mobility. Creation of jobs. Growth of transportation- related industries such as… Road Construction, Oil, Steel, & Automobiles. Movement from urban to suburban areas.

Invention of the Airplane: On December 17, 1903 brothers, Orville and Wilber Wright, will make the first successful powered flight.

The second and third flights covered 175 & 200 feet respectively. Orville was the first to take off, at 10:35 a.m., and flew the Wright Flyer I for 12 seconds, covering a distance of 120 feet, against a 20-m.p.h. wind. The second and third flights covered 175 & 200 feet respectively. In the fourth and last flight, Wilbur remained aloft for 59 seconds and flew 852 feet.

It will be the start of the aviation age… travel will never be the same again.

Inventions That Improved Communication & Entertainment

Electrification Changed American life: Four major changes: Electric lighting. Provided Entertainment. Improved communications. Created Labor-saving products that made life easier.

Effects of the Light Bulb Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb and mechanical uses of electricity.

An Original Edison Bulb and Patented

Effects of the Light Bulb Extends the work day. Increases productivity. Provides a measure of safety with the addition of street lights and eliminating the need for propane lamps inside buildings.

Communication changes: Increased availability of telephones. Development of the radio and broadcast industry (Marconi). Development of the movies (motion pictures). Guglielmo Marconi with his first radio.

Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, improving communication. Link: How a “switch board works Link: How to use a rotary phone

Though many people will construct different types of projectors, which produce moving pictures, Thomas Edison will invent the first “commercially successful” projector in 1896.

Labor-Saving Inventions

Many inventions improved the lives of families & help us to save time… such as the refrigerator, washing machine, running water, toaster, and electric stove.

Start of Inventions For: Day 2

Early American Inventions of the Gilded Age

Inventions That Improved Transportation

Orville and Wilber Wright invented the first plane which flew in Kitty Hawk, NC on Dec. 17, 1903; this invention made it possible to travel by air.

1. Invention: Airplane Inventor(s) Name(s): Orville and Wilber Wright Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Dec. 17, 1903 (Patented in March 1903) 2 interesting facts about the invention: Very important in the 1st and 2nd World Wars. Wright brothers started working on bicycles, moved to gliders, then to planes. Impact on society: Travel along long distances was quicker. Created a new industry.

2. Invention: Automobile Inventor(s) Name(s): Henry Ford Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Model T invented and patented --1903 2 interesting facts about the invention: Ford could produce large quantities quickly and inexpensively. First affordable car. Model –T and movable parts Assembly Line improved in 1908. Impact on society: Jobs, Mobility, Travel, & created the modern suburb.

Inventions That Improved Communication & Entertainment

Communication & information distribution was improved by the invention of the telephone, telegraph, phonograph, motion pictures, and radio.

3. Invention: Telephone Inventor(s) Name(s): Alexander Graham Bell Year the Invention was created and/or patented: 1876 (patented the same year) 2 interesting facts about the invention: Wanted people to say “Ahoy” not “Hello.” Marked the end of the telegraphy. Impact on society: Revolutionized communication (instantaneous communication). New Industry (ex: AT&T), jobs, socializing.

4. Invention: Radio Inventor(s) Name(s): - Guglielmo Marconi Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Invented -1895 2 interesting facts about the invention: David Sarnoff created NBC. (1st broadcasting company. Impact on society: Changed our lives by improving entertainment, information, & news.

5. Invention: Movies Impact on society: Inventor(s) Name(s): - Thomas Edison (first commercially successful projector). Year the Invention was created and/or patented: William Lincoln :1867 George Eastman: 1882 Auguste & Louis Lumiere :1895 Edison: 1896 (his version was patented) 2 interesting facts about the invention: First talking movie ever filmed was the “Jazz Singer.” Animated pictures were first created using a devise called the “wheel of life.” Impact on society: News entertainment, job, created celebrities. Auguste & Louis Lumiere Edison

Electrification and Labor-Saving Inventions

6. Invention: Washing Machine Impact on society: Inventor(s) Name(s): Hamilton Smith William Blackstone Otto Warburg Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Invented 1858: Hamilton Smith Invented 1874: William Blackstone Otto Warburg: 1908 (The “Thor”) 2 interesting facts about the invention: 1797 the “washing board” sparked the idea for this invention Fast and efficient way to clean clothes. Impact on society: Created the soap industry and additional leisure time.

7. Invention: Electric Stove Year the Invention was created Inventor(s) Name(s): - Thomas Ahearn - Lloyd Copeman Year the Invention was created and/or patented: -1882: Thomas Ahearn stove invented (only used in 1 Canadian hotel) On June 30, 1896 William Hadaway was issued the first patent for an electric oven. 2 interesting facts about the invention: Thick metal coils get hot- this is what is used to cook. In homes by the 1930s (towns had to have electricity first). Impact on society: Created jobs, cooking ease, additional leisure time and safety.

8. Invention: Water Pumps Inventor(s) Name(s): - John G. Appold Year the Invention was created and/or patented: Year credited for invention - 1851 2 interesting facts about the invention: First brought into the home in the late 1800s. Provides running water to use inside the home. -Hydro Power: provides electricity. Impact on society: Access to water, electric motors replaced water wheels, running water in homes and businesses.
