Standardization and future generations COPANT - April 2014 Kevin McKinley ISO Deputy Secretary-General

Background Council and ISO members have highlighted the need to increase involvement from the “next generation” and have pointed to the increased average age of experts on ISO standards committees Need to make link between standards and education (at primary and secondary levels as well as university level) and the need for youth to be aware of the value of standards in addressing global economic, environmental and societal sustainability issues

Background Analysis of programmes and experiences of other organizations to help shape ISO’s initiatives for the younger generation: IEC, ITU ISO Members: ANSI, DIN, SA, SABS, SCC IEEE, ASTM WTO, OECD, World Bank, United Nations, World Economic Forum

Opportunities NETWORKING What Why SCHOLARSHIPS Facilitated access to the network of standards experts from ISO members Information on upcoming conferences, workshops and training opportunities through the ISO network Opportunity to participate in selected technical meetings (in particular cases participation can be sponsored) Help to develop the network of relations within the profession An important asset for the development of career paths SCHOLARSHIPS Scholarships offered to deserving young standards officers indicated by NSBs To follow University Masters’ programmes for which standardization is a primary subject matter (for example UNIGE) Selection based on merit and geography Great opportunity of qualification Particularly attractive for YP from developing countries and emerging economies

Opportunities What Why MENTORSHIP CAREER RESOURCES JOB DATABASE Service based on voluntary commitment of standards experts It may be subject to specific conditions (e.g. applicable ot young professionals that seem to have high potential in specific areas covered by ISO / NSBs’ standards committees) Linked to particular initiatives Intended as a bridge for standards experts willing to share and transfer knowledge in particular fields and YP interested in building knowledge in those areas CAREER RESOURCES Resources designed to help young professionals in their career path, including e.g.: Specific materials (guidance on CVs and job applications, guidelines, etc.) Standards experts’ advice Webinars E-learning modules Links to other information resources Help to develop standards related competences required for developing career paths JOB DATABASE Listing of job postings utilizing competencies in standardization From companies, public authorities, international and non-governmental organizations, standards institutions, etc. An International portal hyperlinked to national / sector-based resources A clear and tangible demonstration that competence in standardization is market relevant A practical contribution to find job opportunities A very important element of attraction for young professionals

Developments How would young people design ISO? Making the organization relevant for the future, making us sustainable ISO's committees with many very experienced experts, familiar with their fields and the ISO system. Not always experienced in use of new online tools, new ways of working Further ideas being prepared for ISO GA September 2014: What tools being used – ways of communicating What results matter, what subjects relevant to the young What profiles, platforms and on-going engagement Possible pilot development projects

Tomorrow’s ISO depends on engaging today’s youth
