University of Zagreb Doctoral education is undergoing a radical reform Universities are obliged to offer only three-year doctoral programmes The changes in society  new requirements for the young researchers; development of researchers who will continue their career outside of academia, in private sector, R&D laboratories, in government, in management positions, etc. „Transferable skills development „ – ability to embrace changes and new demands of the job market and ability to use knowledge and skills gained through doctoral education in different working environment

University of Zagreb Doctoral Education – Skills Training Programme Discipline-related skills skills that represent added values and/or greater breadth regarding the specific knowledge involved in doctoral research (related to the discipline and filed) Research skills skills to improve the basic quality of the research Transferable skills skills important to prepare PhD candidates for their future carreers but also applicable to daily-life PhD activities

University of Zagreb In 2009, Doctoral Studies Rulebook less teaching, more time for original research, more structure in the supervisor-supervisee relationships, strict rules for monitoring of PhD student progress, etc. In early 2009, the University founded the Office of Doctoral Studies - organisation of generic/transferable skills workshops, - workshop for the training of supervisors, - the implementation of quality assesment and quality control procedures in the PhD programmes, - work on a doctoral student database, - the process of evaluation and acreditation of new PhD programmes, etc.
