September 6, 2016 Bell Ringer: List the skills and qualities necessary for effective communication. How can this impact your health in positive ways? Chapter 2, Lesson 1 Objective: You will learn to demonstrate communication skills in building and maintaining healthy relationships, refusal strategies and conflict skills, apply self-management strategies and develop evaluation criteria for health information.

Important words to know… Health Skills Interpersonal communication Refusal skills Conflict resolution Stress management advocacy

Building Health Skills The choices you make and actions you take – including foods you eat, friends you choose and activities – affect your health. Taking responsibility begins with commitment. The first step is to develop health skills – life skill, strategy for maintaining health & a tool for improving health.

Interpersonal Skills A trait of a health-literate individual is having effective communication skills. Involves not only making yourself heard but also being a good listener. Interpersonal communication is the exchange of thoughts, feelings and beliefs between two or more people. What are some examples of this?

Interpersonal Skills Traits: Clearly say what you mean. Use “I” messages to state your position. Ex- “I feel frustrated when our plans change.” Pay attention to how you say something. Use a respectful tone. Be a good listener: Avoid interrupting the speaker/teacher

Refusal Skills Why would these be important? Think about how you handle situations that you are asked to do something that could be harmful…. You need to know refusal skills for this. Refusal skills are strategies that can help you say no and resist risky behaviors.

Conflict Resolution Skills This is the process of ending a conflict through cooperation and problem solving. The key is to respect others rights and your own. Examples: Using a polite tone Taking time out Brainstorming solutions

Conflict Resolution Skills https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=_ZpDnXYIFjo Was this right or wrong? Why? How are we resolving our conflict now?

Stress Management Stress, the body’s and mind’s reaction to everyday demands, is natural. Being late to class, balancing activities, winning an award can cause stress. stress management is ways to deal with or overcome the negative effects of stress. What are some ways we could do this? Strategies for managing stress: Laughing (release endorphins) Listening to soothing music (me) Using a calendar to plan your week

Brain Break: We kill and we give life. We are either poison or fruit- YOU choose. What are we? http://sharpbrains.com/blog/2006 /09/28/attention-and-working- memory/

WORDS!

Healthy Skills Activity.. When Mark arrives late at the basketball court, his friend Phillipe throws the ball at him, shouting, “You’re a half hour late!” “Well, excuse me, Mr. Punctual,” Mark laughs. “You’re never on time, It is like you assume I have nothing better to do than wait around for you, Phillip says. “Sorry bud, but some things came up,” Mark Answers. “Yeah, well I am outta here!” Phillip throws up his hands and turns to walk away. “Wait, let me explain,” Mark says calmly. Phillip hesitates, wondering how to respond.. What would you do? What are some of the effective tools for communication that can be used?

Analyzing Influences How do you determine what health choices are right for YOU? Factors influence your health. Internal influences (knowledge, values, likes, dislikes, desires) based on your experiences & perspective of life. External (family, friends, peers, media) are outside sources. Which influence do you base your decisions on now as a teenager? Which do you think is the better choice, internal or External?

Practicing healthy behaviors! Choices you make today determine your future! What are some types of healthful behaviors that can be beneficial if done in routine? *eating nutritious foods Getting regular medical and dental checkups Avoiding tobacco, alcohol and drug use True or false: It takes 21 days to make or break a habit.
