SAC Report a clearer statement of the innovations involved in the comparison of core flood data to numerical simulation. (Was this via history matching or was this genuine validation of the numerical model? Have new mechanisms been observed in the experiments or hypotheses concerning recovery mechanisms been tested by those experiments?) We would urge brainstorming on mechanisms not yet included in the modelling and identification of those to be included. There is a large effort on identification of new tracers. Tracers may offer only limited insights in highly fractured reservoirs Are fractured reservoirs a dominant portion of the portfolio of reservoirs to be addressed? If so, how would tracers be applied

Some members of the committee were sceptical of the efficiency and ultimate usefulness of incorporating Eclipse and IORSim in a single simulation loop several possible reasons why this ad-hoc approach is the best way forward, i.e. a) to demonstrate the usefulness of incorporating the mechanisms in IORSim, in order to convince Schlumberger to incorporate those mechanisms into Eclipse, or b) if Ekofisk, the target reservoir for this work, were a special case not likely to be widely duplicated (and thus not meriting a revision of the larger simulator), we are not sure which explanation applies here. The greatest challenge to upscaling at each level may be heterogeneity below the scale of the grid block. This requires then incorporating these non-equilibrium effects into an algorithm that represents the average behaviour in the grid block If this aspect is not currently addressed, we urge its incorporation into the work plan.

Need for Large scale Testing?

Objectives for the centre and background for changes in the project description The Centre aims to contribute to the implementation of cost efficient and environmentally friendly technologies to improve oil recovery on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Secondary objectives Robust upscaling of the recovery mechanism observed at pore and core scale to field scale. Optimal injection strategies based on total oil recovered and economical and environmental impact. Education of 25 PhD students and 15 postdocs during the Centre’s lifetime.

Objectives for the centre and background for changes in the project description Oil price has been reduced by more than 60% since 2013 Two companies merged into one (Det Norske + BP = AkerBP) One company is sold (Dong) One new company joined this year (DEA) Several large EOR projects on British sector With an increasing focus on EOR from the Norwegian and British governments, and several projects on the way that can demonstrate the potential for EOR, the Centre has an important function of creating a framework where the industry and academia work together to improve technology.

1. Status National and international state-of-the-art of the relevant technologies and research topics for the centre. Based on the Ressursrapport2017, the Centre`s research focus is aligned with the priorities from authorities and strong international research environments. 2. Research methodology Describe the methodology and theories planned used, and explain why they are suitable for generating relevant knowledge in the field and promoting future value creation. Describe plans for publication in scientific peer-reviewed journals as well as plans for conferences and any patents. All details can be found in the work plan(s), still, we would like to highlight two new research methodologies that were not in our original proposal: Large scale testing and The IOR integration activities. It appears to be difficult to obtain all relevant data for a single field, but there is still a need for testing the numerical and analytical methods on the same field. generic use cases realistic (but synthetic) cases Real field data (Ekofisk/Norne/Snorre)

3. Research tasks Identify and describe the research questions that will be examined. Define key research tasks and research-related targets and explain their significance for future innovation and value creation. 4. Researcher training and recruitment Describe plans for researcher recruitment. Specify the number of doctoral degrees planned within which research areas. Provide a target figure for the percentage of women fellowship-holders (cf. Point 8). The Centre has had a total of 18 soon to become 19 PhD students and 11 Post docs since start-up. plan to educate 25 PhD students and 15 Post docs in total, which means that the number of PhDs and Post docs (still) to be recruited are at least 6 and 4, respectively Synergies Integration Cross discipline Across themes and tasks STEP program (STudEnts&Partners)

In addition the plan is that at least 6 PhD students will be involved in following prioritized R&D activities: Upscaling from pore to core and to grid block scale. Data assimilation using 4D seismic and tracer data. Non-Newtonian rheology coupled with CFD solvers Test models against pore- and core-scale data. Couple electrochemical and fluid flow. Two PhD positions will be allocated for studying of polymer models and simulation and for studies of impact of higher order numerical methods on decision making, (Task 6,7,5 and 4) PhD-candidate or Post doc developing new nanoparticle-based and surface-functionalized inter-well tracers

5. Significance for the business sector Describe how the knowledge developed by the centre will be important to future innovation and value creation for the user partners. Describe the potential that the centre’s results may have for generating innovation and value creation in other segments of the Norwegian business sector. Describe the centre’s relevance and benefit to society. In this Centre many industry partners are part of defining new projects based on their needs, thereby ensuring a value for the business sector. The new initiatives described in this document will also increase the potential of increased extraction rate on the NCS, and hence, contribute to society in terms of a very high revenue gain for the state. At the same time, it has the potential to generate increased profit for the user partners and the infrastructure connected

6. Organisation Describe how the cooperation at the centre will be organised and why this structure has been chosen. Describe how knowledge acquired through research activities at the centre will be transferred to the individual partners to stimulate innovation and value creation. 14. Plans for further activities after the eight year period of financing from RCN There will definitely be use for the Centre activities after the eight year period: attract additional industry partners continue the integrated R&D activities intend to apply for infrastructure Many researchers in the Centre are permanently employed at research partners, and therefore we are confident that the core competence of the research team will be in place also after the funding from the Research Council of Norway ends.
