How to Get Started… Start thinking about your appearance What type of language do you use to communicate? What occupational skills do you possess? Love yourself

Appearance -Grooming-hair needs to be kept neat and clean, men need to shave daily, ladies need to wear a conservative amount of makeup, nails should be trimmed and neat -Change the type of clothing that you wear to make you look professional -Do you need to have tattoos removed?

Language Ensure that you use proper communication skills. Minimize hand gestures while speaking Practice eliminating profane language from your daily vocabulary one word at a time.

Occupational Skills What strengths do you have? -Technological -Physical -Social What interests you or are you willing to learn?

Acquiring Occupation After Incarceration -Take the first offer that comes to you. This will give you some occupational growth and experience. -Do more than the basic requirements that the job requires—Go the Extra Mile! -Get reliable references from reputable people.

Acquiring Occupation After Incarceration Continued… Take ownership of your past. Employers have heard every excuse in the book. What they will find refreshing is your honesty. Prove yourself: Once you follow the first three tips, you’ll need to prove the stereotypes wrong. While your coworkers might have the luxury of slacking off and calling out, sick your employer will be watching you like a hawk. If you really want to get ahead, you’ll probably need to put in a little extra effort.

Activity: Building a Support System, Hobbies pg. 42 Individually, complete the worksheet on pg. 42. Together with a shoulder partner review what hobbies they listed.
