Presentation transcript:

ECampus, Starfish, and Signing up for Classes Rachel Campagna Ashley Ramirez Preparing for academic advising in the student's major These three topics are very important for you as students to firmly grasp seeing as you will be using them and doing them for all of your time spent at this University. By the end of this presentation you will be more skilled in using the ecampus and starfish websites and also have a better handle on how to sign up for classes

Importance of academic advising in your major The advisor is a link between the student and University They help us transition, learn, set goals, organize and develop time management Academic advising also helps a student to see that general education courses are not a checklist but rather an interconnected network where your general education courses meet your major courses. http://sites.laverne.edu/academic-advising/files/2010/11/Newsletter.October-2012.pdf ASHLEY

Why do we use Ecampus? -Transcripts -Advisor holds -Enrollment dates -Your schedule -Class shopping cart -Check bills http://web.uri.edu/ecampus/faqs-e-campus-email-and-sakai/ e-Campus is the administrative system that students can use to access their records, register for courses, check
bills and other financial information, look at grades, transcripts, etc. RACHEL

Why do we use Starfish? - it is an easy way for your professors to monitor you -this is how you will be making appointments with your advisor and some of your professors for academic assistance - Login Information: Use your ecampus username & sakai password RACHEL

Ecampus and shopping for classes

ECampus Basics: Before you can start making your schedule, you have to check on your holds: http://web.uri.edu/enrollment/registration-help/ On the homepage, all you have to do is scroll down to view your holds so you can see what you have to do before you can begin enrolling RACHEL

When can you start enrolling. It’s different for everyone When can you start enrolling? It’s different for everyone! Seniors have closer dates while freshman have farther dates Right below where you found your holds is where your enrollment date is. It is important to check this date far in advance so you know when to make your advising appointment and when to start shopping around to plan your next semester’s schedule RACHEL

How do i know about my credits and past courses??? You can find information about: -your AP credits -the past classes you’ve taken -the ones you’re planning on taking -the semester you took the class, -what grade you received -how many credits the class was worth RACHEL

How do i shop for classes for next semester? RACHEL

How do i shop for classes for next semester FIll in the correct term Select the subject, like chemistry classes are CHM, english classes are ENG FIll in the course number and search RACHEL

How do i shop for classes? After selecting the class you want, you can see it in your cart http://web.uri.edu/enrollment/registration-help/ RACHEL

How do i Shop for Gen. ed. Classes for next semester? Similarly to how you shopped for your major classes, RACHEL

How do i Shop for Gen. ed. Classes for next semester? A-Build knowledge of diverse peoples and cultures and of the natural and physical world EXAMPLE: Introduction to Art (ART 120) B-Develop intellectual and interdisciplinary competencies for academic and lifelong learning EXAMPLE: U.S. Environmental History (HIS 364) C-Exercise individual and social responsibilities EXAMPLE: Climate change and the Oceans (OCG 123) D-Integrate and apply abilities and capacities EXAMPLE:Leadership for Activism and Social Change( HDF 414) G-Grand Challenge – Exploration of multiple perspectives of areas of contemporary significance, including their ethical implications EXAMPLE: Exercise is Medicine (KIN 375G) http://web.uri.edu/advising/general-education-2016/

A class i wanted filled up...now what?! = a class is open, you can add it to your cart = a class has filled up, you cannot add it to your cart TIP:-Add every option into your cart for a specific class -Have multiple plans -enroll exactly at the time you have been assigned when making your schedule, add every option it has for the days and times because classes fill up and you won’t always get the classes you want. It’s important to have multiple plans to fall back on when some of your classes start filling out RACHEL

Starfish and advising appts.

Who are all of the people under your success network Who are all of the people under your success network? & What if all of my professors are not listed? First off: to enter starfish you can access through ecampus or simply use the link. You will sign in with your ecampus username and sakai password. This is what a success network looks like. For mine I only have a couple of Professors and advisors listed. Simply, if your other professors are not listed, they might have not set up a starfish yet. So don’t worry about it. You can always email your professor or advisor if they are not listed, if you need to set up a meeting to talk or appointment What’s good is that your professors can talk to each other though starfish and say you aren't coming to class, one of your professors may reach out to the other to see if you are not showing up to theirs either.

How do i Schedule an Appointment on starfish? Go under the professor or advisor you wish to have a meeting with. Go to available date and hit sign up. ASHLEY

Cont’ schedule appt Once you hit sign up, this page will come up. Simply follow the questions & hit submit when completed . Under where tab, it will be listed as to what room you are to go to. ASHLEY

Changing an Appointment Upcoming appointments will be listed on the dashboard. Click the edit icon to edit an appointment, change time. Click the x icon to cancel an appointment ASHLEY

Who is my advisor? Will i always have them? You can find your primary advisor on Starfish. Eventually you will have a new advisor once you transition out of University College and into your specific College http://web.uri.edu/starfish/files/STUDENTGetStartedURI.pdf RACHEL

second grade option You can find the second grade option form at uri.edu/advising Second grade option is always good to know, I used this for my Precalc class freshman year. Basically you can repeat a class by second grade option if you received a C-, D+, D-, or an F. But what is important to know is that second grade option will only apply to courses within your first 30 credits taken at the University. (no later than 2 next semesters after that course) You must obtain approval from the academic deans and submit the appropriate form to the Office of Enrollment Services prior to midterm of the semester in which the course is being repeated. The Second Grade Option may be used only once per course.

Advisors a are a big resource for help, that is their job Advisors a are a big resource for help, that is their job. A lot of you probably feel like this guy on the left, but with all of these tips and preparation for classes, it can be made a little easier ASHLEY
