Best in Class Internal Audit: A catalyst in maximising stakeholder value The Subject. What are the attributes that high-performing and value-adding Internal Audit functions demonstrate to define themselves as ‘world-class’? The scope and nature of an auditor’s job varies by organisation, size, country and regulatory environment that it operates in. Yet, those functions that excel above others, demonstrate common key characteristics. It is essential that Internal Audit is engaged within an organisation and maximises relationships with stakeholders whilst keeping its independence. It is expected that internal audit challenges management, yet at the same time is engaged with business functions as a valued business partner. How is this optimum position balance achieved? To address the varied needs, Internal Audit needs a diversified skills set, with a continuous improvement mind-set that is able to quickly adjust to change. How are these core competencies and qualities acquired and maintained? In addition, it is critical for an Internal Audit function to deploy robust and formal processes with which risk is assessed, an audit universe is defined, an audit plan is developed and follow ups on audit findings are performed. Internal auditors are asked to perform best practices everyday. How do we look at what we do and question why we are doing it?
