PebblePad Enabled Academic Appraisal Juliet Hinrichsen, Head of Academic Professional Development Mandy Brailsford, Principal Lecturer/Professional Lead: Advancing Practice

Background Strategic Enhancement Project: Career Progression and Staff Transitions Follow-on funding: desk-based research

Literature review Stewardship approaches focus on long-term outcomes through people’s knowledge and values, autonomy and shared leadership within a high trust environment. Agency approaches focus on short-term results or outputs through greater monitoring and control. Most UK HEIs adopt a combination of stewardship and agency performance management mechanisms but most institutions are moving towards an increased adoption and greater use of agency mechanisms. Performance Management in UK Higher Education Institutions: The need for a hybrid approach Franco-Santos, Rivera & Bourne (2014)

The 'Bookend' Model Disarticulation of managerial (agency) functions from developmental(stewardship) aims Focus on the middle - the books Integrates Peer Review and Enhancement (PRE) and professional good standing (RIGS)

Bookend in PebblePad Assets: Professional Development Workbook: Annual report consider your own professional and personal development goals self-directed activity over the year Peer review and enhancement activity (PRE) agree objectives for year ahead with manager share with manager (permissions: copy, comment) reviewer adds comment (optional) reflection on and recording of outcomes for the year share with appraiser (permissions: copy & comment) reviewer adds feedback and comment on the year Workbook: Work Planning

Issues perception: format reluctance: online integration/universality

Table 6: PLS for appraisal what were the key points from the presentation? the problem of ownership of the appraisal process requires control to be located with the appraisee only summative elements need to be shared with managers appraisal naturally articulates developmental elements (cpd, peer review) with outputs (achievements, good standing) difficult to shift perceptions from format (workbook as a form) to process (PLS as an owned space to manage career development) The key points of the discussion The tension between the development al aspirations and increasing managerialism HR engagement is key Evaluating impact and evidence Badges REALLY useful Quality of discussion may be enhanced
