What’s Going On Today Brochure Sharing Activity Go Over Assignment Five/ Scavenger Hunt Visual Communication Discussion, Key Terms

Looking Ahead This Week Graphic Design Concepts, Examples, and Basic Software Functions Group Activity Based on Brochures and Posters Starting to Brainstorm ideas for next week (peer response group activity) November 14-20th: second round of presentations and all elements for assignment five are due

Assignment Five Scavenger Hunt

Scavenger Hunt Key Summarize what you learned in a poster or brochure (50%) Short reflective paper about design decisions (25%) A short presentation to the class (25%) Either Assignment Three or Assignment Four True How you matched your content to the audience, purpose of your communication using visual elements, genre selection, image selection, color choices, font/typography, amount and placement of text

Scavenger Hunt Key Cont. The paper must be at least one page How well each of the features are integrated into your presentation: context, substance, organization, style, and delivery The presentation must be at least 5 minutes and no more than 7 minutes There are six panels needed in a brochure False, we must find ways to reimagine the writing and come up with more ways to get the information to the audience Brochure Poster

Visual Communication Key Terms: Pattern Contrast Direction Chunking Color

Key Concepts of Visual Messages Pattern Consistency Repetition, rhythm, symmetry Variety Multiple objects, ideas, colors, etc. Balance Centering, asymmetrical/informal balancing Grid Matrix of columns and rows.

Key Concepts of Visual Messages Contrast Figure-ground Establishes the most fundamental visual priorities Dimensionality Illusion of depth adds interest, clarity, and emphasis Light and shadow effects, overlapping of objects, hot foreground colors and cool background colors

Key Concepts of Visual Messages Direction Lines Leading our vision Repetition Suggests movement with repeated figures Perspective Directs the eye toward the horizon of the piece

Key Concepts of Visual Messages Chunking Proportion Relative size of one element to another Placement Position of one element to another Showing which chunks should receive more emphasis

Key Concepts of Visual Messages Color Hue “color” “hunter green,” “fire engine red” Intensity Brightness or degree of saturation of a single color Value Relative lightness or darkness of a color

Questions: Why do you think the designer chose the colors seen on the poster? How might the effect change if it was shown with darker colors such as black and navy blue? Is this advertisement effective? Why or why not? What emotions are evoked while you look at the image? Think of the terms on previous slides (also located in your Student Guide). How does this poster use them? Are they successful? Who do you think the intended audience is for this poster?

Using the Language Take five minutes to go over the terms and look at your brochure. How does your brochure utilize the terms? Are there things that are missing? How do the colors used reflect the meaning of the brochure? What do you think the intended audience is? Be prepared to share your thoughts with the class.
