Presentation transcript:

The Emancipation Proclamation

Battle of Antietam 131,000 soldiers were involved. 87,000 Union, 45,000 Confederate Considered a Union victory Lincoln gave emancipation speech day after battle on the battle field Start of the union victories in Gettysburg, Vicksburg, and other large grant led battles

Writing of The Emancipation Lincoln could not just take away slavery with out violating the constitutional rights of the slave holder He had to go through many constitutional loopholes to end it He claimed loopholes were instituted to end slavery Initial idea was for the Emancipation to be bait to end the war. The end result was more appreciation of the Union army, and Lincoln from around the world

The Real Meaning Of the Document To give spirit to the people in the North who were loosing faith. Win the battle, but making it seem like the North didn’t win; Not a desperate act Give spirit to the North to get more volunteers for the army

Immediate effect Made people think it was more of a fight about slavery Allowed military to stop returning runaway slaves Had a better relationship with Europe Gave spirit and more volunteers

Long Term Effect Freed some slaves; decreases cotton production Takes away almost all of Southern economy Forces South to trade with North Enforces Anaconda strategy

Executive Order Executive orders are not laws They are a rule or order issued by the president to an executive branch of the government and having the force of law.
