Genre Conventions: The Western GENRE CONVENTIONS OF THE WESTERN Location Usually set in the 1800’s Mid West, either in desert areas or in a small town/mining community. This is, historically, a real location which (usually) features fictional characters. Characters A clear divide between the Good and the Bad: The Local Sherriff, Gunfighters, Prostitutes, Cattlemen, Bandits and Native American Indians. These characters can be fictional or based on real-world people such as Wyatt Earp, Jesse James and Billy the Kid. Narrative Usually one of rescue and or redemption for an individual (the Lone Gunfighter arrives in town and purges it of a negative force) or a group of gunfighters are hired to defend a village or a standard Revenge Narrative. Significant Objects The most obvious is the gun (a symbol of power and authority), cowboy hats, horses, steam trains (a symbol of emerging civilisation and technology) Themes and/or Issues The Binary Opposition between the Civilised and the Uncivilised. The emergence of the Civilised West. Reminder of when we did this task previously

Genre Conventions: The Slasher GENRE CONVENTIONS OF THE SLASHER HORROR Location Characters Narrative Significant Objects Themes and/or Issues Hard copy to be handed out. Students to feedback

Horror Sub Genres Can you add something here to move them away from slasher sub-genre. We need an introduction to the genre itself, (before I start talking about camera techniques. What is a horror? What makes a horror?)

Camera Techniques Appropriate camera, sound and editing techniques are essential for producing the right emotional response from the audience. How does the short film ‘Mama’ use… Mise en Scene Lighting Camera Techniques Sound Editing …to communicate horror narrative, scenario and genre. How are these techniques used to enhance the audience experience and generate audience responses?

Establishing Opening title is a juxtaposed image that mixes childish chalk writing with eerie silence and dull colour Establishing shot uses mise en scene to establish location and time. We know that we are in a girl’s bedroom due to the contents of the room. Foley sounds include the girl breathing and the ticking clock. The clock is used to establish time but also could be described as a mimic of her heartbeat. This could be described as an over the shoulder shot as we see the sister enter and fall in the background Feel free to correct

Long take A long take is used to connect a series of pre-planned shots. The take works to build up tension and allows the audience to question the narrative and ‘imagine’ the horror.

Lighting The lighting is used to create silhouettes and dark patches that draw the audience’s focus into the unknown. This is supported by the silence and the objects that we must look around or over. We look over the shoulders of the protagonists as if we are walking and experiencing with them.

POV As the protagonists look over the banister, we look with them. This also facilitates the move from following the girls, to seeing them from the front.

Music As the protagonists walk down the stairs the music begins and we focus on their facial expressions. The audience can no longer see what is in front of the girls.

Whip Pan A whip pan hides an editing cut to create the illusion of a long take. Foley sounds are used to support the narrative. We hear a smash and a phone.

Long shot It is common to feature an over the shoulder shot of the protagonist with a long shot of the threat. The picture below (from another horror short) demonstrates this. Foley sounds are introduced when we see Mama, to create an alien effect. The music, which disappeared to create a sense of tension, reappears.

Long take Following another cut hidden in a whip pan, the camera runs with the protagonists up the stairs. The camera is erratic, not focusing on anything in particular. The music also works to heighten the tension and panic.

Task https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nM9xIOlEVLo

The previous film was based on a two sentence horror story competition launched on Reddit

Task Compose a horror story using 2 sentences (no slasher or zombie) Share these with the group.

Task For 4th March you must use your short horror story to generate one or more of the following. You do not have to all of them, but we expect them to be completed in order: A still photograph or an illustration that captures the horror of your story A photographic storyboard of an influence A script or shot list A drawn or/and photographic storyboard of your idea An animatic A final film Not sure how this works in the wider scheme of work. Ingo asked for tasks to be launched earlier but do they have the full theoretical knowledge to do this? What will we do during the next three weeks before the presentation?

This is the original plan. Does it need amending?
