Poisson d’Avril Class 8: 4.7.2017

L’Histoire King Charles XIV decided to change the calendar from the Julian to the Georgian. Thus, the New Year was changed from the end of March to January first. All of those who forgot about the change, or were ignorant of it, were deemed as “fools” or in French “fish” and teased on April 1st. A common prank has since developed! More than likely in France, a child will stick a paper fish onto the back of an adult, then runaway shouting “Poisson d’Avril!”. Many bakeries and chocolatiers sell chocolate fish pastries to celebrate on April 1st.
