Road Safety Checklist Continue By Leon Swanepoel ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Road Safety Checklist for Trucks & Buses. Roadworthiness is one of the most important requirements for road safety and requires that regular vehicle inspection is done.   Vehicle inspection is done regularly, according to mandated procedure to ensure that a vehicle conforms to regulations governing safety and emissions Vehicle inspection should also focus on the safety of the driver and other road users. Are YOU Roadworthy? Here is some important advice on how to check the Roadworthiness of your vehicle. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Braking Systems. Continue When starting the vehicle, air pressure must build up to maximum (cut-out pressure) When pumping the brake pedal, the air pressure should drop but pick up when not using the brake pedal. Continuous pumping on the brake pedal should drop the pressure until the low pressure indicator warns you with a buzzing sound and a flashing light. The air pressure should adjust and recharge to maximum when you leave the brake. Air tanks must be drained daily to prevent fluid build up. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Tyres. Tyre pressure must be to the manufacturer’s specification, for the load to be carried. Tyres must have a consistent tread pattern over the full width of the tyre. Tyres must be of the same size and type on the same axle. Dual wheel tyres must not make wall contact. Always check all tyres for lumps, cracks and bulges in the side-walls. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Steering. (engine may have to be running during inspection). Steering must operate freely and easily from lock to lock. The Power Steering Reservoir must be full. Check all pipes for stone damage and leaks. The steering wheel of the vehicle must not be cracked or broken. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Windscreens, Windows and Wiper blades. A cracked windscreen that obstructs a driver’s view will not pass a roadworthy test. Windscreen and window glass must be clearly identifiable as safety glass. Any vehicle must be fitted with at least one windscreen wiper in operation in front of the driver. Wiper mechanisms and blades must operate effectively by adequately clearing the driver’s view when in operation. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Visibility. (lighting systems on the vehicle). The following lights are compulsory by law and must be in full working order at all times: Main beam and dipped beam (headlights), Front and rear park lamps, Stop, tail and number plate lamps, Indicators and hazard lamps, Reverse lamps. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.

Bodywork and Accessories. All bolt-on accessories like bumpers, bars and mirrors must be fastened and secured correctly. Overhead storage racks must not be overloaded. All ropes, slings, straps and chains are stored correctly and in working condition. All door handles and window winders are present and in working order. Continue ©Transport Logistics Consultants.
