Questions Thank You

International Student Internship – Appendix A International Student Internship – Work Permit Process Work permits for international students can be tricky.  The following offers clarification of the steps and attempts to simplify what can sometimes be a long and complicated process.   All international students are required to obtain a work permit.  International students at Tyndale are not permitted to work in Canada, with the exception of on-campus work.  The Canadian Government does allow work permits for internship placements because internships are connected to a student’s program of study.  They do not apply for a general work permit, but rather a co-op/internship permit (http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/study/work-coop.asp).  The processing time for this permit can vary. Typically, students should expect the permit to arrive 6-8 weeks from date of submission.

The internship registration process for international students is as follows: They apply for their internship via the normal process. Once they have secured their internship (i.e. submit application, complete an interview and are accepted), they complete a non-classroom registration form and submit it to the Registrar’s Office. (the form is online at http://www.tyndale.ca/registrar/forms) When they submit the form to the Registrar’s Office, they must complete a letter request form (also available at http://www.tyndale.ca/registrar/forms) and request a Work Permit Letter. The reason that the registrar’s office needs to see the signed non-classroom form is because they must verify that a student is completing the internship and its duration. Students are to submit both forms at the same time. Registrar’s office completes the Work Permit Request letter and the students apply for the work permit (the non-classroom course form is on hold when this happens) When the permit arrives, the students submit a copy of the permit to the registrar’s office, at which time, the non-classroom course form is processed. Students are then able to begin their internship.

You may contact Sharon Chuah for additional information. Note: The work permit does not cancel the study permit.  When students have a placement and are ready to submit the non-classroom course form, then the registrar’s office can proceed with the work permit application.  Student should give at least two months for the permit to arrive.   Source: Registration Officer – Academic Support, Tyndale University College & Seminary. You may contact Sharon Chuah for additional information.

CASC Internship Guideline (Updated Sep 2016) Appendix B CASC Internship Guideline (Updated Sep 2016) Overview Tyndale recognizes the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) and Pastoral Counselling Education (PCE) course unit as equivalent to selected M.Div. Counselling courses. Upon prior consultation with the Coordinator of internship, a student may take a CASC (formally CAPPE) CPE or PCE unit as a substitute for selected Tyndale counselling courses as follows: One CASC (CPE or PCE) unit may be substituted for counselling internship course (COUN 0701) One CASC (CPE or PCE) unit may be substituted for two Tyndale counselling elective courses for students in the Pastoral Care and Counselling track only. To qualify as a substitute for the internship course, the CASC unit can only be taken after the appropriate counselling internship pre-requisites have been completed.

CASC Internship Guideline Cont’d Appendix B CASC Internship Guideline Cont’d Procedure: Student consults with Tyndale Coordinator of internship regarding taking a CASC unit Student contacts a CASC (CPE or PCE) supervisor and applies for the unit. When accepted, the student registers for the unit, pays the required fees (see information below) and begins the program. Upon completion of the unit, the student provides the following to the Coordinator of internship: Learning contract Log of internship hours (minimum of 150hrs direct client contact and 300hrs additional) Copy of final supervisor’s evaluation report Certificate of CASC Unit completion (The registrar’s office will be notified by the internship program Coordinator that the student has completed the unit [e-mail]) The student pays Tyndale a posting fee of $100.00 to have the CASC unit posted as a substitute for COUN 0701 (or a fee of $200 for the specified two elective courses). Note: Students taking the CASC unit for counselling internship are required to participate in the regular scheduled internship reflection groups in fall and winter semesters. Separate arrangement will be made for students who complete their unit over the summer months.
