Heat transfer. Why does heat transfer happen? Heat is a type of energy called thermal energy. Heat can be transferred (moved) by three main processes:
 The measure of the average kinetic energy of particles. Temperature doesn’t depend on the number of particles.

Convection

Explain how convection occurs in a convection chamber. Convection begins by smoke entering the chamber. The smoke passes ice which_______ the smoke and makes it more _______. When smoke is dense it ______. The dense, cool smoke passes along the chamber bottom where it hits a lit candle. The ______ from the candle causes the smoke to become less dense and so it _______. This creates a convection cell of sinking and rising smoke in a circular pattern.

Density Density is the ratio between a mass of a sample of matters and its volume. The mass of a sample is the amount of stuff in it. Mass is determined by weighing it. Mass is generally measured in grams. Volume is how much space a sample of matter occupies. All matter has volume. Volume of liquids are measured with a graduated cylinder or a syringe.

More Density Definitions Solids and gases are measured in cubic centimeters. Cubic centimeters and milliliters are the same. Density is the amount of mass per cubic centimeter. Density can be expressed as an equation. Density=Mass Volume

Review: Ways heat is transferred Get solar radiation from Sun Radiant energy (Solar Energy) travels in waves Visible light, infrared light and UV light responsible for heating Earth’s surface Earth materials ABSORB radiant energy..

More review When radiant energy is absorbed, molecular motion (kinetic energy) increases. Molecular motion (kinetic energy) =heat Conduction is the transfer of heat by touching; air molecules touch the warm earth and heat is conducted

Heat in solids Atoms or molecules in solids are locked together, but still vibrating. Radiant energy causes the molecules to vibrate more and creates more motion which is how HEAT is conducted through a solid material- CONDUCTION

Convection Defined and Explained

More convection Explain what is happening

Convection is The movement of air or water masses due to a difference in density. For example: When a mass of fluid (gas or liquid) is warmer or colder, than the surrounding fluid, the mass will rise or sink. Convection happens only in fluids where molecules are free to flow. (Gas or liquid)
