Biodiversity vs. Techno Diversity Can we look to the natural world as a model for our storage strategies?

Biosphere Review Species Populations Communities Ecosystems Interbreeding organisms Populations A group of individuals of a given species Communities Interactive populations Ecosystems Dynamic communities within a physical environment

Technosphere Analogy Species Populations Communities Ecosystems Storage technologies - Disk, tape and optical Populations Storage technology groups and systems Communities Storage resources and network interaction Ecosystems Dynamic storage communities within an organisation

Species Roles Species Storage technologies - Disk, tape and optical Each species has its own role to play in the ecosystem Disk - Performance Tape - Capacity Optical - Longevity Species contain genetic variations Disk - Fibre Channel, SCSI, SATA, SAS… Tape - LTO, DLT, AIT … Optical - CD, DVD, Blu-ray, UDO…

Species and Roles Magnetic Disk Optical Disk Magnetic Tape Strengths Data Availability High Performance Read/Write Access Magnetic Disk Strengths Data Authenticity Extended Data Longevity Rapid Random Read Access Low Total Cost of Ownership Optical Disk Strengths High Media Capacity High Performance Streaming Low Storage Cost per GB Magnetic Tape

Population Relationships Populations Storage technology groups and systems Species require populations to survive and evolve Enterprise storage demands integrated solutions RAID systems, tape & optical libraries Populations facilitate interbreeding - Technology hybrids Disk to disk Disk to tape Disk to optical

Species Evolution Evolution Natural Selection Technology advancements Technical success or failure Market acceptance

Community Interaction Communities Storage resources and network interaction Populations develop methods of community interaction Efficient data movement must be explicitly designed NAS, DAS, SAN … Communities depend on food webs Storage structures rely on data and workflow

Community Networks NAS SAN DAS Clients Servers Switches Server LAN Attached Storage Clients SAN Storage Area Network Switches Servers DAS Direct Attached Storage Server LAN

Food Webs and Workflow Food webs Digital Workflow

Ecosystems Ecosystems Dynamic storage communities within an organisation Ecosystems consist of biotic communities and abiotic factors Hardware, software and humans Business requirements, finance constraints, regulatory compliance, corporate policies … Disruption can dramatically impact operation of the overall system Environmental, man-made and external factors influence storage demand

Ecosystem Disruption Ecosystem Disruption Disaster Recovery Nutrients, temperature, light, species density … Fire, flood, drought, over population Disaster Recovery Fire, flood, accident, sabotage … Organisational Change Contracts, acquisitions, resource, budgets, corporate direction, bankruptcy, litigation …

Techno Diversity Conclusions Each species has a role to play Recognize the inherent technical strengths and weaknesses Species evolve and change Embrace new and evolving technologies Complex food web relationships provide resilience Understand data types, workflow and interaction High bio diversity creates system stability Don’t rely on single technology strategies Ecosystems are in a constant state of change Expect and plan for change Ecosystems are interdependent living structures Build a robust environment through an understanding of business requirements and techno diversity

Techno Diversity Conclusions "An archive strategy to meet today’s demanding compliance standards is a business imperative. IT executives should strive to separate fixed content data from production data and move static data to an active archive. A best practice for securing long-term data archives is to maintain three copies of data on at least two different types of media in multiple locations, mitigating the risk of media failure. At least one copy of the media should be removable and be maintained offsite for disaster recovery purposes.” Carolyn DiCenzo, Research Vice President, Gartner, Inc.
