The Nervous System

Warm Up 1/4/12 What is the main job of the nervous system? What are the main organs that are a part of the nervous system? How do YOU think the nervous system helps us to maintain homeostasis?

Announcements Nervous system quiz tomorrow. Make sure you review for the quiz it is the last one for the human body unit. Human body test has been moved to Wednesday, January 11th. We will review on Friday and Monday of next week to get ready! Remember the new grading policy for homework. Therefore, you need to turn it in on time.

Nervous system Yesterday, you learned that the central nervous system is made up of the brain and spinal cord. However, these organs receive messages from nerves, that are found in your peripheral nervous system.

Peripheral nervous system This is made up of all of the other nerves located in different parts of the human body. Types of nerves: Sensory- gets information from the environment such as (heat or cold) and sends it to the brain/spinal cord. Motor- sends messages to allow your muscles to move.

Voluntary nervous system Helps you move your voluntary muscles. This sends messages that allows for you to make conscious movement- such as speech, walking, jumping etc.

Articles for Stations You will read different articles and watch different videos about diseases that attack our nervous system. Your job is to gather information to fill in your table!

Stations Disease What does it do to the nervous system How it affects a person What happens to the body’s ability to maintain homeostasis Station 1 Station 2 Station 3 Station 4 Station 5 Station 6

Independent practice Compare two diseases that affect the nervous system. On your side of your notebook, describe how it prevents you from maintain homeostasis.

Warm Up 1/5/12 Why do we have a nervous system? What organs do we use? List two or more diseases that affect our nervous system. How do they prevent us from maintaining homeostasis?

Announcements Quiz Today! Notebook Check today! I will be looking for: -nervous system pictures (70 pts) -Stations chart (25 pts) -Warm Ups (15 pts)

Idea Web Turn to page B100 in your text (if you need a guide) We will be making idea webs (on white copy paper not nbk paper) You must make connections between the nervous and other body systems. Be sure to explain how they help you maintain homeostasis.

Once you are done Review Time… If you are not silently reviewing at your desk….you will get your quiz.

Quiz time

Human body unit review You will make review questions for the human body system test… Each question will earn extra credit points.

Warm Up 1/6/12 How many systems did we learn about during the human body unit? Describe the order of things in the human body unit. Hint (cells are first!) There are various systems connected to the circulatory system. Give at least 3.

Announcements Your human body test will take place on Wednesday. You have two review days…so there is no excuse not to do well. Incentives/Class competition Science Fair Review sheets at the end of class/goal setting

Idea web Turn to page B100 in your text (if you need a guide) Your job is to compare the different body systems based on their job, parts and how they help you maintain homeostasis.

Pair Work In pairs, you will need to decide which system would you need the LEAST. Based on your knowledge, from class, notes, the textbook etc. you and your partner will decide which body system you could live without. You must justfy your answer, describing how or why you picked that particular system.

How will you show your work? You and your partner may choose from: A brochure A short story A cartoon (with at least two paragraphs describing the actions in the cartoon). A children’s book meant to be read by someone in 4th or 5th grade.

Expectations Each person must be actively working on their mini-project. You will receive a participation grade. If you are not in a seat working diligently, your grade will suffer. The class must be quiet. If you need to borrow supplies, ask before you get up!

Due Date….not the movie This will be due at the beginning of class on Monday. There can only be two people working together. I will assign partners.

Warm up 1/9/12 Draw a K/W/L chart List all the things you know about the human body under K List things that you want to review in the human body unit under W List things that you learned in the human body unit under L

Announcements

Mini-projects Yes, they are due today! Turn them in NOW. If you don’t have it, oh well 

Share outs A few students may show the class what they did and explain their work 5 minutes

Practice Test Yep, that’s right…..today you will take a practice test. Afterward, we will review and go over the answers before the real test.

Review Pointers for writing good short answers: Read the QUESTION! Answer all parts of the question. Sometimes hints are in the QUESTION! Pay attention. Use complete sentences and grammar/punctuation. Write real words (ima, idk, sorta like etc. are not real words in the English language so do not write them in science class) Don’t try and be slick by re-writing the question in the answer space. You will still get a zero. Proofread your work before turning it in.

What do we know already? Homeostasis Connections

Any last questions

Work on review sheet

Warm Up 1/11/12 On your sticky note write down the numerical score that you think you make on this test. Remember, I am calculating the class average. The class that bests their projected average gets a prize. Once you are done with your goal, you can take time to review you notes for your test. If its loud, I shut it down!

Things you need A sharpened number 2 pencil Your mind A closed mouth

Test time Good luck Lakers 

Once you are done Turn the test in and grab a sheet off of the projector.
