September 1, 2017 Warm-Up: Complete the worksheet Have GIZMO sheet ready for turn-in HOMEWORK: Quiz tomorrow! Know how to get the atomic number & mass from the periodic table box. Know how to determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom.  Know the charge and location of each subatomic particle. Know how to determine ions and isotopes. USA Test Prep due Friday.

Chemical Symbol = abbreviation used in formulas and equations Atomic number = the number of PROTONS – always - and the number of ELECTRONS (usually) Atomic mass = the number of the PROTONS + NEUTRONS

Atomic Math If you subtract the ATOMIC NUMBER (which is your number of PROTONS) from the ATOMIC MASS (which is your number of protons plus neutrons) that tells you the number of NEUTRONS alone! Example: Gold has an atomic number of 79. It has an (approximate) atomic mass of 197. 197 – 79 = 118 Therefore, the average gold atom has 79 protons and 118 neutrons!

Atom Game Directions Green = protons, red = neutrons, yellow = electrons Everyone starts with an equal number of marbles You can play up to 5 marbles at a time You must make an atom/ion/isotope that really exists State the name of what you made If no challenges, play moves to the right If challenged and player is correct, challenger takes 5 marbles from player and play continues If challenged and challenger is correct, the player must take all marbles on the board and restart

Atom Game Object: Be the first to get rid of all your marbles by building correct atomic models Get Ready: Make a H atom on the board. Divide remaining colors of marbles evenly among all players (start with equal numbers of green, blue, and yellow marbles). Start: Player 1 can add up to 5 marbles to make a correct neutral atom. State the atom, with number of protons, neutrons, and electrons. If group agrees it’s correct, play moves to the right. Challenge: If someone thinks the built atom is incorrect, then they can challenge. If the challenger is correct, the builder has to take all marbles on the board (except H). If the challenger is incorrect, then s/he has to take the marbles. Play continues til time is up or one player runs out of marbles.

Atom Game – Round 2 Play as you did in round one, but you can also make ions and isotopes! Ions must match the likely ion formed by each family (+1 for family 1, for example – see BLUE periodic table) Isotopes must match a stable atomic mass (see RED periodic table) All rules from yesterday remain the same – object is to be the first one to use all your marbles by making correct atoms/ions/neutrons. You can play up to FIVE marbles at a time. You can challenge a potentially incorrect structure. If you’re right, the builder takes all marbles on the board. Challenge incorrectly, and YOU take the marbles!
