Solar PV Updates PDE Summit, December 2009 Good Morning. It sure is good to be here today!
JCI 5kW PV Kits Updated PV Kit Consists of: (24) SolarWorld 230-watt PV modules (5.52 kW total DC rating) SMA 5000-watt inverter One of three racking options: Tilt-up Ground/Roof, Ballasted roof mount, Flush-mount for pitched roof More small parts to make a more complete PV system Electrical drawing, physical layout drawing, warranty info., installation manuals
JCI 5kW PV Kits Updated PV Kit Ordering: Order the modules direct from SolarWorld, contact is Cindy Vernon, cindy.vernon@solarworldusa.com Order the rest of the kit from AEE Solar, full-service renewable energy equipment distributor, contact Michael Brennan, mbrennan@aeesolar.com See the “ReadMe” file and more on the Renewables eRoom under “Solar PV” “JCI 5kW PV Kits new”
SolarWorld SW230 230 watts DC Monocrystalline Made in OR, CA, USA
SMA SB5000US Inverter 5000 watts AC Can operate at 208, 240, or 277 Vac Built-in DC combining/fusing Built-in DC/AC disconnect World leader in small PV inverters, from Germany
Direct Power and Water (DPW) Tilt-up Rack Adjustable Tilt Angle, 20 – 65 deg. Telescoping rear legs Suitable for Roof/Ground Mount L-feet at bottom
Direct Power and Water (DPW) Ballasted Rack Tilt Angles available from 0 – 35 degrees Need P.E. to calculate amount of ballast for site Padded stainless steel pan at bottom
Unirac Flush-Mount Rack, “Post and Rail” Module Mid Clamp Module End Clamp Rail Module Grounding Clip Grounding Lug Posts L-Foot Flashing
Unirac Flush-Mount Rack, “Post and Rail” umm… OSHA fall protection, anyone?
PV Array Wiring Insulated Multitap Connectors in J-box
PV Array Wiring Weathertight Strain Relief Connectors, bottom of J-box
PV Array Wiring Module wiring: Two leads w/connectors come on each module. They connect together to make a series string. Module cables dressed to racking or to module frames.
PV Array Wiring Can use pre-made module wiring “whips” or make your own using crimp-on connectors. Crimp-on method is less expensive if you’re doing a big job.
PV Array Wiring
PV Array Wiring Module Grounding: Lay-in lugs (tinned copper, e.g. Ilsco GBL-4DBT) Wiley WEEBs (they are ETL-listed for the purpose) WEEBs are inexpensive and easy to use but you’ll still need some regular grounding lugs to ground the rack Must get permission of the electrical inspector if using WEEBs
DC Combining/Fusing Box – not part of the Kit + Fuse Holders Combined + Output - Combining Block Combined - Output
…because it’s built into the SMA inverter
…because it’s built into the SMA inverter When AC/DC disconnect is shut off, inverter is “dead”, can be unwired/removed
Lightning Arrestors Usually both DC and AC lightning arrestors are installed to protect the inverter. Can be installed in the inverter, in a J-box, or in a safety switch (disconnect). LA 302-R AC side LA 602-DC DC side
AC Disconnect, usually required by Utility

PV Small System Design Small System Design Small systems, up to 50 kW, can assume SolarWorld 230 mono modules, SMA or Fronius or PVPowered (made in US, but 240Vac only) inverters Can use multiple inverters to make your system size SMA String Sizing program – note that you can’t spec an arbitrary system size, it needs to make sense in terms of module strings Each inverter manufacturer has their own string sizing program

The largest number of PV modules you can put in one series string depends on: (choose one best answer) The PV module used + the average high temperature at the site The wire size used for module wiring + the PV module used The PV module used + the record low temperature at the site The space available on the roof + the PV module used
The smallest number of PV modules you can put in one series string depends on: (choose one best answer) The PV module used + the average low temperature at the site The lowest voltage where the inverter can operate The PV module used + the average high temperature at the site 1. and 2. above 2. and 3. above
