Case study: PlazaMedia Moving from OB production to IP production Nevion Confidential

German content solution provider Nevion Presentation 13 April 2018 German content solution provider One of the leading producers of sports TV in the German-speaking area plazamedia.com PLAZAMEDIA GmbH, is an established content solution provider for the entire spectrum of media platforms, as well as one of the leading producers of sports TV, both live and non-live, in the German-speaking area. In addition to public and commercial broadcasters, its clients include platform operators, international sports associations and reputable sports rights agencies, as well as numerous national and international enterprises Nevion Confidential Nevion Confidential

ARCHITECTS OF VIRTUALIZED MEDIA PRODUCTION Nevion Presentation 13 April 2018 Objective Migrate Germany’s famous football talk show from traditional OB to IP-based remote production ARCHITECTS OF VIRTUALIZED MEDIA PRODUCTION PLAZAMEDIA approached Nevion and its German partner LOGIC media solutions with the challenge to migrate one of its productions, Germany’s famous football talk show “Der Volkswagen Doppelpass”, from traditional OB to remote production.  The two sites involved were the studio, located in the lobby of a luxury hotel, and PLAZAMEDIA’s main production facilities, located some 20km (12 miles) away. IP technology was chosen as the most suitable solution due to the connectivity available between the production site and the broadcast facility and the significant amount of control requirements. Baseband  IP Ventura VS902 Nevion Presentation The solution 13 April 2018 IP Switching VikinX eMerge Baseband  IP Ventura VS902 Management VideoIPath The solution deployed involved: Nevion ViknX eMerge IP switches Nevion Media Gateways Ventura (VS 902) for baseband to IP conversion (SMPTE 20220-6), J2K compression and MADI transport, as well as protection (SIPS/SMPTE 2022-7) Nevion’s VideoIPath to manage (and monitor) the whole set-up Nevion Confidential Nevion Confidential

Solution – highly redundant network Nevion Presentation Solution – highly redundant network 13 April 2018 VideoIPath - Openflow Video SDI 10 G IP-WAN MCR x6 Audio 2022-6 2022-6 SDI J2K + SIPS J2K + SIPS 10 G IP-WAN MADI MADI MADI Central production Local Production 2022-6 J2K +SIPS 12 miles 20 km Location production Central production For this solution, PLAZAMEDIA chose a mix of JPEG2000 and uncompressed (SMPTE2022-6) for video and MADI for audio. Nevion eMerge Media Routers and Media Gateways form the backbone for all real-time production, control and management signals. The connection between the 2 sites was provided by two separate WANs, each with a main and back-up path. The VideoIPath management and orchestration system provides software defined network (SDN) connection management and service monitoring, ensuring a simplified set-up for the production crew.  The transport, management and device control of this set-up have built-in redundancy, which makes the solution even more robust and scalable than traditional SDI solutions. The solution when live in August 2016. Nevion Confidential Nevion Confidential

Solution – production flows Nevion Presentation Solution – production flows 13 April 2018 Camera shading (data) Location production Central production facilities Camera feeds (SMPTE 2022-6) Camera shading V x6 Graphics A Return feed (J2K) EVS operator Multiviewer (SMPTE 2022-6) Sound engineer Mixer panel Audio (MADI) Producer / Vision mixer operator Vision mixer control (data) Sound engineer Mixer frame 20 km 12 miles The most important and revolutionary aspect of the set-up is the production flow between the locations. On location, there are only 2 (two) production staff: a sound engineer/mixer and the producer who also acts are the vision mixer operator. The rest of the production crew (sound engineers, playback operators, graphics operators, etc) are based in the central facilities. The actual mixing takes place physically in the central production facilities, but crucially, is controlled remotely (over IP) by the producer/mixer. The feeds are transported from the (typically 6) cameras to the centralized location. A multiviewer view of those feeds, as well as the other feeds provided from the centralized location (e.g. clips) is transported back to the producer on location. Based on this, the producer can use the mixer console to send the mixing instructions back to the mainframe in the centralized location. The camera shading is also controlled remotely, from the centralized facility. And finally, return feeds are sent from the central location to the cameras (in compressed form J2K). Overall, this set-up enables the production to take place with a very small crew on site. Nevion Confidential Nevion Confidential

Benefits Upgraded facilities to an IP-based infrastructure Nevion Presentation Benefits 13 April 2018 Reduced logistics on location Upgraded facilities to an IP-based infrastructure Streamlined production workflow Jürgen Konrad, IP solution designer at PLAZAMEDIA said: “One of the main project drivers was reducing the logistics on location and to streamline the production workflow, but we also wanted to upgrade our facilities as we see a lot of benefits in having an IP-based infrastructure. We went to air with the system for the first time in August [2016] and have broadcast the show successfully, without any issues since then.” Nevion Confidential Nevion Confidential

Jürgen Konrad, IP solution designer at PLAZAMEDIA Nevion Presentation 13 April 2018 “ ” We can definitely say that we now have a very flexible, scalable, reliable and most efficient setup, that is the way forward for live TV production Jürgen Konrad, IP solution designer at PLAZAMEDIA PLAZAMEDIA seen this set-up as the way forward for live IP production.
