Gold & Silver Mining Westward Expansion

The Blue Mountain Gold and Silver Mining Company A graphically attractive stock certificate for 100 shares of The Blue Mountain Gold and Silver Mining Company Incorporated on September 9, 1887

Granville Gold Company Granville Gold Company was established in 1879 in North Carolina. The company operated two mines, one in Stanley County and a second in McDowell County.

Altar Gold & Silver Mining COMPANY Incorporated in 1878, the Altar Gold and Silver Mining Company operated in the Altar District of the Mexican state of Sonora. The ore rich Altar district runs along the coast of the Gulf of California and the Sonora-Arizona border. The Altar Gold and Silver Mining Company had one of the area’s most profitable mines.

THE ROWAN GOLD AND COPPER MINING COMPANY The Rowan Gold and Copper Mining Company operated in Rowan County, North Carolina at the height of the state’s gold production. Prior to the California gold rush, North Carolina was the leading producer of gold ore in the country, and Rowan County was home to the most active area known as Gold Hill. As gold mining moved west, copper became the desired target of miners in North Carolina and the industry would go on to surpass that of gold mining.

The Rivals Gold Mining Company A standard type of Certificate issued for a Colorado Mine in 1898.

THE ASTOR GOLD AND SILVER MINING COMPANY The company was incorporated in 1864 and worked 12 claims and lodes in Eureka Gulch, near Silverton, Colorado. Finding gold in this area led the U.S government to pay $25,000 annually to the Ute Indian Tribe in return for turning over 4 million acres of their reservation land. The town grew until the last mining operations ceased during the Great Depression and the town Eureka was deserted.

The Mascotte Gold Mining Company The Mascotte Gold Company was comprised of 100 acres of lode and placer claims in Park County, Colorado. This area, situated near the town of Buckskin Joe, was one of the most profitable gold ore producers in the region during the first half of the 1860’s.

Golden Conqueror Mines Incorporated Golden Conqueror Mines, Inc. was located in the Cripple Creek District of Victor, Colorado. This area is situated on the corner of Pikes Peak in the Colorado Rockies and continues to be an active site of mining operations today, after gold was first discovered there in 1890.

NIAGRA MINING AND SMELTING COMPANY The Niagara Mining and Smelting Company owned and operated claims, including the Spanish Mine, around Bingham Canyon, Colorado. The company would sell the Spanish Mine and 22 other claims known as the Niagara Group, which became one of the 3 original properties that merged to form the United Stated Mining Company in April of 1899.

Ancram Silver Lead Company The Ancram Silver Lead Company was located in Columbia County, New York and operated the Ancram Silver Lead Mine. Mining operations took place in a small range of hills running along the Ancram township.

Wild Goose Mining and Trading The Wild Goose Mining and Trading Company was established in 1899 by Charles Lane, the founder of Nome, Alaska. Gold was discovered in Nome along the Anvil Creek. Lane bought 66 acres of land and formed the Wild Goose Company, quickly becoming one of the regions leading mining operators. Stock signed by Charles D. Lane, as president.

The New England Exploration Company The New England Exploration Company was the business entity for a group of wealthy businessmen, mostly based in Boston. The Company bought the Smuggler-Union Mine in Telluride, Colorado. At the time of purchase, the Smuggler-Union Mine was one of the most valuable mines in Colorado. The stock is signed by Bulkeley Wells as Vice Presiden, who was tough on unions at a time when many miners were unionized.

Arizona Copper Syndicate Limited Arizona Copper Syndicate operated multiple mines, including the Copper Rocks Mine (Cochise County, AZ) and the Clifton Copper Mines (Graham County, AZ). The company went under in 1903 and the Clifton mines were taken over by Clifton Copper Mines, Ltd.

The Standard Coal Company of Eastern Ohio The Standard Coal Company of Eastern Ohio, signed as Secretary by Thomas Nast, “Father of the American Cartoon”.

Los Angeles Mining and Smelting Company The Los Angeles Mining and Smelting Company was officially organized in 1877 from Balance Consolidated Gold and Silver Mining Company founded in 1875 by William and Robert Brown, who found ore south of Resting Springs in Amargosa County, CA. The new company was organized by Jonas Osborne with new investors from Los Angeles after acquiring most of the ore laden land from the Brown Brothers.

Juniata Coal COmpany The Juniata Coal Company was an early Pennsylvania mining company in Bedford County. The company operated two mines in Broad Top Township, one in the Sandy Creek valley and the other in Six Mile Run valley. Coal began being pulled out of these lodes by the turn of the 19th century.

Mammoth Copper Mining Company Mammoth Copper Mining Company operated in Blue Hill, Maine along with some 30 other mining companies during the mining boom of 1880.

Mohawk Mining Company Established in 1898, the Mohawk Mining Company was a leading producer of copper operating on the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan. The mine was famed for its Mohawkite, a mixture of copper and arsenic. The company operated until 1932, and in 1934, the Mohawk Mine was bought by the Copper Range Company.

Spurr Mountain Iron Mining COmpany Established in 1872, the Spurr Mountain Iron Mining Company operated 160 acres surrounding Spurr Mountain, near Lake Michigamme, Michigan until 1878.
