Location: has to do with where you are. Theme 1: Location Location: has to do with where you are. There are two types of location: 1) and 2) absolute relative Absolute Location Every place on the earth has an absolute location. Absolute location is determined by using a ____________ of imaginary lines of latitude, or parallels, and lines of longitude called meridians. Ex: Grand Rapids’ absolute location is: 42° 53' N 85° 31' W grid system

Relative location Relative location says where a somewhere is in relation to other places. Notice the grid system on the satellite image. Can you also describe Michigan’s relative location, or where it is in relationship to other places?

Place describes what a place is like. Theme 2: Place Place describes what a place is like. You can describe the place where you live in terms of: human characteristics… clothing? music? religion? jobs? recreational activities? or physical characteristics… Climate? Natural resources? Landforms?

Theme 3: Human/environment interaction This theme is used to described how people change their environment (See image A below.) and how the environment, or one’s surroundings, influences ______________(See image B.) human behavior A. B.

Theme 4: Movement Movement describes how people in one place make contact with people from another. Think 1) communication, and 2) transportation.

Theme 5: Region Can you figure out which region of the world this is? Region: an area that shares common characteristics Can you figure out which region of the world this is?
