Previous Development Plan targets Target 1: To continue to improve the experience and quality as well as the variety of core Physical Education. Target 2: Increase girl participation within the extracurricular activities within the school. Target 3: To introduce a sports recognition evening within the school calendar. Target 4: To continue to improve the current numbers attending extracurricular physical activity classes. Target 5: To continue to improve Community Club Links on from S1 introduction.

How we achieved our targets Target 1: Young people are keen and enthusiastic in taking part in Physical education. Nearing full participation and targeting consistent non participants to become fully engaged in activities. New activities in place e.g. scooters, hula hoops etc. Target 2: New, bright PE boards specifically aimed at girls participation completed. Holy Cross pupil posters in place and rolled out through Authority. T-shirts and water bottles given to award winners to encourage reward in taking part in PE. Target 3: No separate evening but separate sports sections in lower and upper school awards. Notice board in PE to promote successes of evenings. Target 4&5: Marked increase in S1 uptake in 2016-17, more variety offered and Sports Leaders leading full extra-curricular programme. This followed on from full 3 week club intro courses with hockey, rugby, dance, netball and TKD.

Section 1: Physical Education 1. Maintained: Continued to ensure that all pupils S1-4 get 2 periods of Physical Education per week. 3 sections of National pupils at S3 and S4 plus Higher/Nat 5 section in S5 and Sports Leaders in S6. 2. New / Improved: Dance at National 5 level is new this year on option forms for S3 and S5/6 options for 2017/18. New courses development in progress to address SALs and the new benchmarks for assessment. 3. Next Steps: Continual monitor of courses and activities each year and adapt / add activities as changes dictate.

Section 2: school sport 1. Maintained: Continue to offer a wide range of extra- curricular activities that pupils find appealing. Pupil voice through the Sports Council but also through questionnaires of pupils experience of PE. Very positive feedback throughout all years and from parents during parents evenings. Undertaken new ’Fit for Girls’ programme in partnership with sportscotland for 2016-2018 2. New / Improved: offering a wider variety of sports such as Rowing, Hockey & Rugby. Pupils have greater opportunities to take part in competitions e.g. rowing, rugby, swimming able bodied and non. Our kick-start / nurture group have been involved in new age curling within PE and had visit to Hamilton Ice rink. 3. Next Steps: For 2017 we aim to launch a loyalty card system for pupils who attend extra-curricular clubs to increase numbers and encourage sport participation. Pupils will be able to achieve a loyalty point through any extra curricular activity or school teams or linked events. Working in partnership with Parent Council on funding for rewards for pupils attending throughout year.

Section 3: Pathways 1. Maintained: S1 Club taster month which lets all S1 have taster sessions from a number of Local Clubs in area. This is supported by Active Schools Coordinator. 2. New / Improved: Continued established links with local clubs and all parents & pupils continuing to receive information about all local clubs. Clubs who deliver extra-curricular clubs in school have now entered school teams into competitions & Leagues. This gives pupils further experience in school situation & at local club facilities. 3. Next Steps: Run a sports fayre for all local clubs to hand out information / short tasters to all pupils in school.

Section 4: compete and perform 1. Maintained: Allowing pupils to compete in a number of competitions/festivals such as Netball, Athletics, Indoor Rowing, Boys/Girls Football, Badminton and Dance. Pupils continue to represent school, authority and clubs at local, regional, national and international competition. 2. New / Improved: Increased participation rates due to the wider range of activities offered to compete in. – Rowing etc Our Sports Council organising and running a number of new sport events for pupils to participate in during school hours. Events include S1 Sport Sport Challenges & Dodgeball festival. 3. Next Steps: Have further in school competitions for each year group.

Section 5: Celebrating sport 1. Maintained: Pupils are continuously recognised for success through school notice boards, twitter, newsletters and school assemblies. 2. New / Improved: P.E. department have new twitter account which is continuously being updated with pupils sporting success within school and outwith. Celebrating sport by having a number of sporting athletes visiting school to celebrate their sporting success. Section 5: Celebrating sport Follow us @HolyCross_PE Now an integral part of the departmental day we have so many examples of the pupils and schools excellent work, achievements and recognition which can be found on our twitter page.

Section 6: leadership 1. Maintained: Continue with Sports Leaders Programme in S6. Primary festival transition programme continues to be huge success. Sport coach academy through Active Schools give opportunities to work in community and with other schools Continue with S1 & S3 Outward Bound Courses 2. New / Improved: More CPD courses, more coaching opportunities, assist events (dodgeball). Focus on leadership throughout curriculum to allow pupils to have opportunities to take on leadership roles. Ref, umpire, captain, warm ups. Sports Leaders are delivering weekly activities in local primaries. Sport Captains delivering workshops at SLS conference with Stewart Harris in partnership with sport scotland Case study on Leadership at Holy Cross realised by sportscotland 3. Next Steps: Deliver sport specific festival for feeder primaries.

PE & Drama Staff after Squash / Racketball CPD Section 7: CLPL 1. Maintained: Staff continue to attend a number of CDP courses to develop knowledge or keep up to current Health & Safety legislation .e.g. Trampolining, First Aid 2. New / Improved: Several staff attended new CPD opportunities. (Squash). Staff running clubs outwith of PE staff being introduced to Club coaching. Club coaches who are UKCC qualified are supporting staff in extra-curricular clubs. 3. Next Steps: Staff being able to attend UKCC Level 1 Courses for specific sport. Section 8: Recognition & Reward 1. Maintained: Celebrating awards night for pupils in school. Continue to praise pupils through school newsletter and achievement postcards 2. New / Improved: Pupils achieving and celebrated on board also gain a PE pin badge to display on blazer. Introduced a “Sport Award section” at Junior and Senior prize giving evenings recognising sport success. Section 9: Access to School facilities 1. Maintained: Local community and clubs continue to use sport facilities at night. 2. New / Improved: In partnership with Active schools the facility is used afterschool for sport coach academy students to complete CPD. S5 Sport Coach academy students from school use facility to run a free local community club for all local primaries. This gives access of hall and equipment for sport coach academy to run this free club. 3. Next Steps: N/A at present
