13. Jesus: Slain Lamb John 19:17-37 p. 999

Jesus’ words on the cross Words are powerful. We will let Scripture take hold of our souls Seven sayings of Jesus: Mt 27:46 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps 22:1) Lk 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Lk 23:43 “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Lk 23:46 “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Jn 19:26–27 “Woman, behold, your son!” ... “Behold, your mother!” John 19:28 “I thirst.” (enacting Ps 69:21 – sour wine) John 19:30 “It is finished,”

Jesus’ words on the cross . . . Seven sayings of Jesus: Mt 27:46 “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Ps 22:1) Lk 23:34 “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Lk 23:43 “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Lk 23:46 “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” Jn 19:26–27 “Woman, behold, your son!” ... “Behold, your mother!” Jn 19:28 “I thirst.” (enacting Ps 69:21 – sour wine) Jn 19:30 “It is finished,”

1. Behold your son ... Behold your mother Jesus was responsible for his family. No record of his brothers being at the crucifixion Jesus is redefining the meaning of family Discipleship trumps biology! (Mk 3:34-35) We always have a family we belong to.

2. I thirst Resonates with Psalm 69:21 – a lament of David The hyssop branch Exodus - Mark the doorposts with blood (Ex 12:22) No bones broken - the Passover instructions (Num 9:12) Jesus is our Passover (1 Cor 5:7) Not a sacrifice for sins – marks us for life

Links to motif of desire for God (Ps 63:1, 143:6) 2. I thirst . . . Links to motif of desire for God (Ps 63:1, 143:6) Jesus experiences the thirst of the human soul. God will satisfy our thirst forever (Isa 55:1, Jn 6:35, 55)

3. It is finished One simple word in Greek. Means it is completed (cf. Jn 17:4) Refers to completion of religious duties Accounting term: signifies a debt is paid.

Three key moments – Scripture says “It is finished” CREATION – at the completion of the Cosmos (Gen 2:1-2) As Jesus dies – finishes the work of REDEMPTION God completes the RESTORATION of all (Rev 10:6-7) The day that Paul describes (1 Thess 4:16)

Living It Let the Holy Spirit focus your attention Do you delight in the new definition of family? Do you resonate with Jesus’ thirst? (or Passover rescue?) Do you hear the work of redemption is finished? Your guilt is gone. Your debt is paid.
