Literature
Literature Langston Hughes I, too sing America. I am the darker brother. They send me to eat in the kitchen When company comes, But I laugh, And eat well, And grow strong. Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table When company comes. Nobody’ll dare Say to me, Eat in the kitchen, Then. Besides, they’ll see how beautiful I am And be ashamed— I, too, am America. Langston Hughes

Why the cultural shift? Urbanization and the “new” economy On the farm there were no days off, there was no “quitting time”, and once it got dark you were done for the day. With standardized work days, electricity, and days off there was more time for leisure activities Better economic conditions created more social opportunities
Reaction How did “traditionalists” react to the new entertainment?
But has anything changed? “Women wore short hair and lacked decency”
“Music Lyrics are too vulgar” Do I really need to point this one out with examples?
“Dancing is too vulgar and sexual”
