Mental Health

FACT Mental illness can be hereditary FACT Mental illness can be hereditary. One in 10 people in the general population has experienced depression, compared to one in four for people whose parents have experienced depression. 2. A person who has one or both parents with mental illness is more likely to develop mental illness.

3. Mental illness is contagious. BLUFF Mental illness is not contagious. Heredity can, and often does play a factor in the development of the disease. 3. Mental illness is contagious.

TRUE The first episode of a mental illness often occurs between the ages of 15 and 30 years. Embarrassment, fear, peer pressure and stigma often prevent young people from seeking out help. 4. Mental illness tends to begin during adolescence.

BLUFF Mental illness is associated with chemical imbalances in the brain and requires a comprehensive plan. 5. Mental Illness can be cured with willpower.

ADHD ( Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) Makes it hard to focus and sits still Makes it hard to finish things Makes thoughts and jump around -Can learn to control by figuring out what helps them focus -Talking to a doctor or mental health professional -Can do better in a quiet room -They are as smart as other people and can still do well in school and in life.

Anxiety (Panic Disorder) Sudden feelings of fear-panic attacks which can make your heart speed up, make you feel afraid, dizzy, or feel like you cant breathe.

Autism Spectrum Disorder Changes the way the brain understands the world. Can have hard time talking about their feelings, understanding people’s actions, and being social. Very sensitive about being touched-being hugged can be scary and uncomfortable. Smart, good in math or music, their brains work in different way, can learn how to work and lay with others.

Depression Makes people feel very sad all the time and may feel that nobody loves them Changes the people think, feel and act. Can make the body feel sick too. May not know why they feel so sad.

Eating Disorders Focused too much on food and body weight. Fear of becoming too fat or obese

Anorexia weight loss from not eating 2. Bulimia eating large amounts of food over a short period of time followed by an attempt to get rid of it- purging 3. Extreme overeating eating, and eating, and eating and then having feelings of guilt and shame.

Behind the problem we see is something bigger- a person’s sense of self-esteem, relationships, feelings and how the person handles the stresses of life. Doctor, mental health professional and nutritionist are important helpers.

PTSD (Post- Traumatic Stress Disorder) Keep feeling afraid even after the scary part is over. Might have bad dreams that seem real, or think something bad is going to happen again.

Schizophrenia Makes it hard for people to know what is real and what is not. Can make the brain think it sees or hears things that aren’t really there.

Help how-to’s Reach out to people you trust Take action the more you know the easier it is nothing is worse than nothing it’s all in the attitude
