8th Grade Science December 10, 2014 Learning Objective: Describe the effect of the Earth’s tilt. Bell Ringer: Where are the metalloids located on the periodic table? Today – Seasons

Newton’s Laws Review 1. 2. 3.

8.7 The student knows the effects resulting from cyclical movements of the Sun, Earth, and Moon (A) model and illustrate how the tilted Earth rotates on its axis, causing day and night, and revolves around the Sun causing changes in seasons.

Seasons Rotation causes night and day. Revolution causes seasonal changes. The energy from the sun strikes the planet differently because we are a globe (sphere). Areas near the equator receive the most energy all year. Areas near the poles do not.

But, what causes it?

Equinox and Solstice Equinox means the sun is directly over the equator. Equator = Equinox. Solstice means the sun is as far north or south as it will go. Summer solstice and winter solstice. Summer solstice is the longest day of the year. Winter solstice is the shortest day of the year.

Why is the sun lower in the winter?

The flip In the northern hemisphere it is currently cold outside. In the southern hemisphere it is currently warm. Summer here/ Winter there Spring here/Fall there Fusion Link

Questions: Does the tilt (23.5 degrees) change during the year? What is the definition of a year? In the Northern Hemisphere, what season is in June? In the Southern Hemisphere, what season is in June?
