Welcome to Mrs. Trainor Room 25

About Mrs. Trainor This is my second year at SCES, and my fifth year of teaching. I have taught 3rd & 4th grade previously at Tolbert Elementary. I lived in Madrid for a year and taught English. I have a Master’s degree from WVU in Elementary Education. I am from Sterling but I currently live in Ashburn with my husband. I love spending time with my family, reading a good book, and I try to travel as much as possible 

AN AMAZING, INCREDIBLE YEAR! What to Expect in AN AMAZING, INCREDIBLE YEAR! A year of higher expectations as we prepare for middle school. A year for positive attitudes and a can-do spirit. A year of growth, expanding on what your child already knows. A fast-paced year where students will often guide their own learning, take the initiative, and work together as a team. A year where your child will feel protected, loved, and heard, and when they leave, they will be PROUD of their achievements.

CHORUS The Sycolin Creek Singers is a year-long after- school program.  This year, practices will be on Wednesdays from 7:10-7:45 AM or 2:45- 3:30.  Singers perform at many events throughout the school-year, including Veterans Day, the Holiday Sing-a-long, the Talent Show, the Fifth-Grade Fundraiser and at a Frederick Keys Baseball Game, as well as 2 formal concerts.

The Sammy Show Fifth graders have the opportunity to participate in the Sammy Show (morning announcements). Each class will be assigned a month that they are on the show. Students must complete an application and audition. If chosen, they will need to be at school by 7:30 each morning. Being on the Sammy Show is a privilege. If a student does not arrive to school on time, is misbehaving in class, or has missing assignments, he/she will not be able to participate.

Our Curriculum READING: We will follow the Pathways reading program schoolwide, with a daily block of independent reading time. Students will read an appropriate, on-level book of their choice. Nonfiction and fiction texts Story Elements (ex: setting, plot, characters, author’s purpose) Literary Elements (ex: cause/effect, sequencing, inference, figurative language) Book Clubs Accelerated Reader (AR) LANGUAGE ARTS: Wordy study, composition, journal entries, writing prompts, parts of speech, editing, and punctuation.

Curriculum, continued… SCIENCE: Taught by Ms. Kenny. Students will use the scientific method and investigate units in earth, life, and physical science. MATH: Taught by Mrs. Trainor. Units include place value, decimals, fractions, operations, geometry, variables. SOCIAL STUDIES: Regions of the USA, states and capitals, geography, maps.

PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) School-wide Behavior Plan 5 Sammy Spots: Recess, hallway, bathroom, bus, and cafeteria 3 anchors: Respect Self Respect Others Respect Property Students can earn Sammy Tickets at any spot from staff members. Individual and class rewards Look for Sammy Stickers on your child if they earn an individual ticket. Class goal = 100 stars and rewards are earned Check the school’s webpage for PBIS updates!

CLASS DOJO Classroom Behavior Plan for 5th grade. It is an app that we will be using. Each student has an avatar and the app keeps track of their points they receive and lose throughout the day. If you connect, (there’s a paper on your child’s desk with directions) you will be notified when your child receives and/or loses points and the reason. Behavior: Students will lose points if they display a behavior that doesn’t align with our school/class expectations. Positive Reinforcement: Students can earn points from teachers and specialists for exceptional responsibilities, collaboration, citizenship, among other behaviors. Every 2 weeks, there will be a Class Dojo Store where students can purchase opportunities and items using their points.

Homework Homework is the students’ opportunity to practice and gauge their understanding of a concept. Homework will be written in the agenda each day. Homework should be completed independently. If homework is not completed it will be noted on the DOJO app. Questions about homework? Try your best! Parent can write a note to let me know. Homework will consist of: 20 minutes of independent reading nightly. Word Study (2 activities per week), studying for tests. Math (nightly) Occasional projects/studying for assessments.

Agenda Use it! It’s a great way to communicate between teacher and parent. Strengthens students’ organization and study skills. Prepares students for middle school independence!

Grading & Report Cards Indicators for progress follow the national rubric: 4= Exceeds Standards 3= Meets Standards 2= Progressing Towards Standard 1= Below Standard Students’ graded assignments will show a number score (1-4), not a letter grade. Students will be graded on their classwork, class projects, oral presentations, quizzes and tests.

SOL Testing Fifth graders will take 3 SOL tests in May on computers. Science Math Reading
